7mm-08

Sorry guys my daughter was telling me she shoots 140s in her 7-08, we were shooting 120's in the 25, sorry I'll be the horses ass, for that one. Thanks for the time and good luck shooting.

Hi guys, just reading some of the post on the 7mm 08, it sounds like a really nice caliber too shoot and also hunt with up to Elk size game. I bought myself a Savage 12bvss 22-250 last year and have been hand loading target loads and having a lot of fun. I am interested in buying another caliber,7mm 08) after reading these posts. Recommend any other rifles other than Savage?

Thanks JC for the reply. I forgot to mention I would be using the rifle for target/silhouette and occasional hunting, so I am thinking maybe something with a heavier barrel. Has anyone used the Howe 1500 varminter rifles? they look sweet!

Hi Guys, I have a heavy barreled 7mm-08 that I use as a "Stand-Gun" here in Texas. I have hunted Whitetails, Axis, Aoudad and hogs 'aplenty. I use, believe it or not, a Hornady 162gr A-Max. I shoot 43grs of H-380,with a 26" barrel) for right at 2700f.p.s. This thing opens up V-E-R-Y quickly so "shoulder" shots are out...However, it FLATTENS everything it touches. Sometimes I have "exit holes" & sometimes I do not. Not to worry, I have not had anything run over 25yds. Most drop where they stand. Placed in the Heart / Lung area, this bullet is deadly! Oh and by the way, did I mention that on "bad days" it shoots about 1&1/8" at 200yds...

Hi guys. I'm fairly new here and do not shoot BR, but hope to get into the sport one day. I do shoot and hunt. I don't have a customized rifle...or even a bolt action rifle. I am a leftie and just have never bought one over the years. My main hunting gun has been a semi .30-06. I am now beginning to look at bolts. Okay, to shorten my story... I own a 7mm-08 in a Browning BLR lever action and love that little gun. I'm not sure if it's the gun or caliber.,I know it's the caliber)It just fits me and my needs perfectly. So, when I find a left bolt rifle that I like in 7mm-08, it will be my first bolt. Finding a lefty 7mm-08 might be a challenge though. Anyway...I guess I didn't shorten my story after all...I really like the 7mm-08. I will also start loading rifle cartridges once I have my bolt in 7mm too.

I bought a Rem 700 BDL sporter used, bedded it, trigger job, freefoated the barrel.

Put a 6.5x20 Leupold on it.

42.0g of IMR 4895, Rem case, 9 1/2, 130g Speer BT steated to touch the lands.

This load simply flattens deer right where they stand. My Nephew used this rifle to kill three does at 300-325 yards, all DRT!

Layne Simpson developed the 7mm SGLC,Simpson's Good Little Cartridge), which was the .308 Winchester necked down to 7mm, and fireformed to have a 40 degree shoulder. It pre-dated the 7mm/08 by a number of years.

Click this link for more information:

Layne Simpson writes that he achieved 3000fps with a 140gr Partition, and used it to take a Shiras Moose back in 1976.

Hope this helps,

Michael.

I know this is really old, but if anyone knows where to get a Die Set for this SGLC I would be thankful.

I love the round. Honestly, what's not to like??? I use mine for everything, from fun in the gravel pit to black bear to woodchucks. I use those Speer 115 grain hollow points for chucks. I haven't really found what I would call a bad load for the thing.

So this thread just came alive again. I started it 10 years ago. This makes me feel so old. Haha. Rem06 if your out there reading this it makes you ancient.

And yes the 7mm-08 is still super cool. Some things won't change over time.

7 08 is a very good one, 9 or 9.5 for the twist on 160's, easy recoil, easy to reload, hits hard. Grab any short action to rebarrel and you'll likely be happy. Elk sized game needs good bullets that will penetrate, and reasonable shot selection, good placement.

My opinion on 7mm-08AI is that the AI is so that I hardly ever need to Trim cases.

Cloud Peak Gunworks in Basin WY has a 30 degree reamer that still feeds out of a magazine great.

Same shoulder angle as my 6.5x47

My whole family hunts with 7-08's

I shoot 168 Gr bergers in mine.
They shoot 139grain hornady factory sst or gmx

We live in Texas and shoot lots of Deer and Hogs mostly from 75 to 250yds.
Most are DRT.
Of course that could have something to do with breaking their Necks :-)

What powder do you use with the 168s

I use 2000MR in my 7-08 too. I found it too temperature sensitive for F-TR shooting, but for 308 sized cases in hunting applications it gives great results.

I run 140s at ~2900 out of a 24" barrel.

2000MR
7MM-08 - 168 BERGERS AT 2740 PER RADAR IN A 24INCH BARREL
NO PRESSURE SIGNS
308- 208 AMAXS AT 2610 PER RADAR IN A 24INCH BARREL
NO PRESSURE( THIS IS A REMY 5R BARREL)
LAPUA BRASS
FED 210 GMM PRIMERS

Shot a 700lbs Nilgai at 410 yds with 308 because ranch insisted we use 30cal or bigger.(they were VERY dubious) wanted at least a 300WM
They said 7mm (of any variety was not enough gun) :-( (what dummies)

Shot it in the high shoulder (Broke its Spine) in the Sendero because I wanted to load it easy and the ranch guy thought I missed it because I dropped it in its tracks.
These are big tough african sized wild animals.
My 7-08 would have done the same.

They all shoot behind the shoulder and they dont find half of them because they run into the Thick South Texas Brush. So naturally they think "NOT ENOUGH GUN"
when most have TOO MUCH GUN.

Pardon my rant.
just my 2cents
