7mm-08 reloading question

In many Remingtons, we shoot 130g Speer btsp on white tails at 3000 fps, and the 130g HOT core flat base when you need more penetration on large hogs.

Rem Brass
Rem 9 1/2 primer
42g of IMR 4895
bullet seated within .005 of the lands
3000 fps

Deer rarely take a step.

In our deer clubs, brother, nephew and I converted many Guys that shoot hard kicking calibers to the 7/08 with this load!

We have had stellar results here in SC shooting deer out to 325 that I have done. If there is a down side to these 130g Speers, I have not found it....other than availability.

I've shot everything from 120gr Hornady HP varmint through 168gr Berger VLD through my Stevens 200 in 7mm-08AI with the factory 22" sporter barrel.

IMR 4350, H414 gave good accuracy. Speeds in the 2,830fps range with 140gr bullets.

Big Game was non existent in my local area, so i didn't get to try that.

RL17 was speed king with 2,916 fps using 140gr Berger VLD.

Most consistent powder was Alliant PP2000MR. 2,832fps with ES-6, SD-2.

Being a hunting rifle, i mostly used a Vortex Crossfire II 4-12X42 with BDC reticle.
Zeroed at 200 yards, the BDC aligned almost perfectly out to 600 yards.
Was a simple range, set to 12 power, and hold the reticle.

Worked well on a doe at 413 yards. She made it 20 yards from where i shot her. 140gr VLD performed exactly as advertized.
Went in 1-3 inches & came apart.
Both lungs & heart destroyed. Found jacket between 1" fat layer & hide on opposite side.

I also used that rifle & load for my first F-Open 600 yard match.
173, 173-1X, 173-2X.
I was happy, but sore. Lol

Going to help a buddy reload for a new Sako 7mm 08. It has a 9.5 twist barrel 22 7/8” long. Just curious if some of you guys have a good deer bullet and powder for this gun and twist barrel? Thanks

I have a 20" Steyr Pro Hunter II with 1:8.7" twist. If you are not overly concerned about velocity then try this one:

150 gr Sierra Game King (#1913) spitzer // 39.5 gr RL-15 // CCI BR-2 // Starline Brass // 2.196" base to ogive // 2500 fps - can add roughly 50fps per inch added to barrel length (estimated) // Estimate 1850fps @ 400 yds

This round @ 100 yards is stoopid accurate. Have not had a chance to take a deer with it yet but, it is a SGK and they are very well known for accuracy and taking game.

Had a real good combo by chance while fireforming. 46g 6.5 staball, 150g accutipe laoua brass br2 primers..about 2680fps 22in barrel

I have been deer hunting with the 7mm08 for over 40 years and love it. The best killing bullet for me is the Barnes 140TTSX and Varget powder 43.0 gr using Lapua brass. Very accurate and runs 2850 fps comfortably. My barrel is a Kreiger 9.5 twist and 20.5 inches on a Rem 700. Always one shot kills.

IMR 4895, 42 grains, 140 grain Sierra, SRP and Lapua brass shoots just dandy from a Ruger American

I load 150gr nosler ballistic tips for my wife, excellent bullet for deer sized game but nothing bigger IMO.

Back when I had a standard 7-08, I was using 140 grain Nosler Accubonds for hunting. My gun shot them exactly the same as the 140 grain Nosler BTs, so I could practice with the BTs and hunt with the ABs.

Now that I am using a 7-08AI, I have gone with the 150 grain Nosler ABLRs.

This really intrigues me.
