7mm-08 question on bullets

Been reading that the 162gr A-Max works really well out of a 7mm-08 as you can get to 2750fps. I currently shoot the 175gr SMK out of my .280 rem. Was wondering if anybody out there has any experience with that bullet in the 7mm-08. Just wondering were the accurate loads are velocity wise with it in generally realizing that every barrel is a little different. Thanks in advance.

My son shoots the 168 AMax in his Sako A7 hunting rifle. Killed his first deer with it. It holds sub moa out to 350 yards. That is as far as we have shot it.

What are you using it for?

I run 120 Ballistic Tips at 3150 in a 23" Rock barrel, which is hot on the heels of a 270. I really don't see a need for shooting any of the heavies at 500 and under ranges with that performance.

I really like the Berger 140gr bullets. We have used them on white tail and shot several deer with them. All but one dropped dead in its tracks. The one that ran, ran about 50 yards and dropped. It will turn vitals into jelly.

For hunting I use the 140SGK or the 140 Accubond. For punching paper, 162 Amax

I used to shoot 139 SSTs and 140 Accubonds out of mine when it was a std rifle. Since shortening it to 16" for a suppressor, I changed to 120 TTSXs and using H335, these emerge at 2960 with stellar accuracy and matching killing power. Like a very quiet .223 to shoot but with full-size performance.

I was a total sceptic on Barnes projectiles but experience has totally changed my mind. Man, they kill and quickly. A 120 TTSX seems to have better penetration than a 140 Accubond and definitely better DRT effect

The last 10 deer that I've killed have been with the Barnes 120 TTSX bullet at 3000 fps. Like Chris, I was skeptical of their performance. Well all 10 were one shot kills with distance to recovery of all 10 being ZERO yds! Largest deer was 175-180 lbs. This is now the only bullet that I will use. .75 in. groups, 5 shots at 100 yds.

Guys thanks for the replies. Was thinking more for NRA mid-range and not so much for deer hunting but still thank you anyways.

If you can load long, and for NRA matches you are single feeding so should be no problem if the chamber is throated for it, then I'd shoot the 162Amax over H4350. You'll have to work up the speed.

I'm shooting 7-08 AI, 162 amax at 2650 fps out of a 22 in barrel, it is the most accurate gun I have. It holds tight to 450 yds. It opens up some what at 600.
I almost sold the barrel, can't remember to who. We never figured a price. The price just went up. ;D
I intend to shoot the 180's and 168 Berger's out of this and a longer barrel to see how it looks beside my 284 in the spring.

I am hoping some one comes out with a high bc 150ish gr. bullet for long range target work.

I really like the 7-08 and AI.

You're in luck on the high bc 150! Nosler in coming out with their hybrid bullet to compete with Berger and Hornady in the "long range game". Spring of 2013 they will offer a 150gr, 160gr, and a 175 gr 7mm bullets. The bc's they are stating are pretty high, so everyone is waiting to see if the stated bc's will hold up in the real world. Should be interesting!! You have to go to the Nosler forum to see the info as it is not on the main webpage....don't know why.

I couldn'd find anything about them on the forum.
Gotta link?

Mean while, I'll keep searching for them.
What are they called? Where can I get some?

There stating that there 30 cal 210 is going to have a .730 g1 BC!!
Id say dream on in wonderland, prolly couldnt do that with a solid turned bullet in any profile.

Must say that is interesting. As the 150 or 168 would work well in a 7mm-08. However I will say with my .280 I went back to the 175gr SMKs after shooting the 180 Hybrids the first two years they were out at Perry in 2010 and 2011. Overall I've shot better scores with the SMKs. So while these Nosler bullets are exciting with their BC's I'm still very partial to the 175gr SMK as it shoots great in the 7mmWSM and the 280.

Heman,
I have found the base to Ojive measurement all over the place on the V-Max and the A-Max bullets, for varmint hunting and target practice there awesome, inexpensive, and very accurate for what they are but at rages like 1000 yards I never see anyone win with them, I believe it is due to the large variance in them as it is usually a vertical stringing problem, and I have had a lot of arguments on here about there killing power, there target bullets not hunting bullets and although they can and do kill they have more of a potential for coming apart and not doing a satisfactory job. The best off the shelf bullet for both accuracy and stopping power has been the 140 grain Accubond, the 140 grain Berger VLD has proven to be very accurate but I haven't seen enough kills to have a opinion of how they hold up but I think they are pretty good.
Wayne.

I use in my Sako 85 22ic, Berger 140gr VLD and Sierra 140 gr SBT with outstanding result.... just over +/2900 fps from paper to hunting. for heavy or tough game (boar, black bear) I use Barnes X 140 gr.
