7mm-08 long action?

It seems as though the 7mm-08 does well with 140/160gr bullets seated farther out than a SA mag would allow. Has anyone experimented with building a 7mm-08 repeater off of a long action to allow for the longer COL?

I haven't, but it sounds like a great idea. Same with the 260 Remington.

Just a few things I can think of that might be considered are making sure the lands are in the appropriate place to allow the longer length, and the issue of enough neck length for the long boat tails bullets to be seated out.

I'm running a 308 off of a long action with COALs approaching 3"

It works great and wins matches. The only thing to watch is running significantly shorter COALs than the magazine box. The rounds can shift about quite a bit and it can help you develop a tendency to short-cycle the action (it's the idiot behind the buttpad, not the gun). Another potential problem is that the rifle will be approx 1" longer overall than with a short action. In order to get the compactness needed for field use, the barrel has to get shorter - not always a recipe for success.

I would recommend that you take a long look at the Wyatt magazine box. It allows quite long COAL with a short action Remington (or clone).

Good luck,

Thanks for the replies. Looking at building a hunting rifle off of a Savage action with a blind magazine. The extra length of the long action doesn't bother me but I want to be sure it will cycle smoothly.

Good luck,

Alpha Industries Mfg makes S/A mags that will accept round with an extended COAL. They run 2.985 internal OAL, but the feed ramp of a Remy 700 has to be modified to accept the longer round.

We've built .308 and .243's on long actions and they work great. We're building them on long actions for the same reason you want to build one and like I said they are working fine. Good luck, Brian Brown.

I have a .260 and a .308 on savage long actions and they work and cycle perfectly. The .260 is on a centerfeed which I prefer as feeding is super smooth.
