7mm-08 Custom Build

Need some advise again guys. I'm building a 7-08 bolt action for play and hunting, I need advise as to the barrel twist for Amax 162g. projectiles going 600, 800 and 1200 yds.
I load 139/140's for hunting at much shorter distances with my current Browning AB3.
So my questions are as follows:
1) Barrel length and twist? Manufacturer? (I live by Brux Barrels)
2) Best action to build on? Manufacturer?
3) Ideas on a good stock to work with?
As always, Thanks in advance!

I think more of a 1-8 or 1-8.5 Twist ? Been down this road.

Large Ring 98 or pre-64 Action Build a Classic Hunting Rifle
Claw Extractor , Fine Walnut Stock

I'm about to put the finishing touches to a similar build in a few days. I hope to shoot it later today. It's a post 64 m70 built from parts I've gathered over a few years. The stock is a nice AA walnut Accurate Innovations stock. I put a stainless bbl on it but now I'm wishing I had done cm and blued it. I might do a black oxide finish on it and see how it turns out. I'll try to post pics later. I had an old Canjar m70 trigger laying around, so it finally found a good home on this one.

shot 1000's of 140vld's with IMR 4064, Lapua Brass, CCI BR 2

just took the high spots off the necks and used 3-4 thousandths neck tension

combination worked very well

Just one pic and it's not very good but I'll post it.
The good news is, it's a half inch gun with very little effort.
The bad news is I'm short on speed before getting pressure signs.
Might try a different powder but for now, I'm gonna find a deer to try it out on.

I had a Stevens 200 (Savage model 10) in 7mm-08. Which i then reamed out to 7mm-08AI.
Using the factory 22" sporter barrel i shot everything from 120gr Varmint bullets through 162gr SST.
I tried a lot of different bullet and powder combinations!
I did my first competition with that rifle, 600 yard F-Open.

One thing i'd advise on. If you want to shoot the 162 AMAX, then have the barrel throated for them. Otherwise the 160gr and heavier bullets are WAY crammed into the case!

But if you do that, the lighter bullets may suffer from a longer than ideal throat.

1:9 will stabilize the 162gr bullets to 600 yards, and further.

Check out The Social Regressive on Youtube. He did a 1,000 yard build on the 7mm-08.
Fairly informative!

I should note that i still have my old shot out barrel.
I checked and it's a 1:9.5 twist.

I don't know how many rounds were put through it as a 7mm-08. I bought the rifle used.
After reaming to AI, i put 6,000 rounds down the tube.

I know there isn't much love on this forum for Savage, but they are inexpensive, and easy to work on. Biggest issues i have with factory Savage is the trigger & stock.
Rifle Basix takes care of the trigger.
Boyds, Richards, and our own @jghoghunter for wood stocks.

I have a Choate Ultimate Varminter, it's ok, but HEAVY at 4lb for a hunting stock.
I'd like to get one of the GRS chassis to play with.

Any feedback on Tikka actions vs Rem 700 vs Winchester 70?
Tikka's bolt throw, in stock form, is one of the nicest you'll find.

Be aware, Tikka uses a recoil lug built into the stock, that fits into a recess in the action.
Ditto the Savage Axis.
I had the face of an Axis action machined off to the face of the recess. But doing so takes about 0.200" of threads away.

You can’t set a rifle up to be ideal for everything

Right now I’m slowly converting my hunting rigs to either M70s, falling blocks, or Defiance controlled feed actions. The 168 will pay dividends if you are really shooting that far.

I set mine up for the 168s, my reamer has a .188 freebore, and now going on 10 yrs later I kind of wish I had set it up for 140s, I never run anything else.

I'm still on the fence on setting it up as a dedicated long range tool. I agree on the 140 usage vs the 160's.
I've looked at the Defiance actions as well.

Thanks for the input.

@Laurie has done quite alot with the 7mm-08, and can give you some great practical use feedback.
@284winner may have done some work with the 7mm-08 also, if i remember correctly.

I did my 600 yard F-Open using 140gr Berger VLDs.
Rifle was a hunting rifle so not as heavy, nor my stock set up for a rest & bag.
By the end of my second 20 round string, my shoulder was feeling it!

Of course being my first competition, and first time shooting prone didn't help any either.

If your planning on longer distances, and longer strings of shooting, i'd look at bullets with a more forgiving ogive contour.
They'll let you seat the bullet further from the lands and possibly help reduce some felt recoil.

I had thought of building one based around the 160gr Tipped MatchKing with a 30" barrel.
