7mm-08 168gr. Accuracy load data

Hi Dennis.... Welcome to this "thread"... I have 3> 7mm-08's and I use one,1) strictly for target shooting>>>rather than burn barrels out on all my guns. I started to build target rifles to just "shoot" so as to save me alot of $$$$'s... My particular "target" 7mm-08 has a 1 in 9 twist and it really likes this IMR 4007 powder...IMR 4007 has an almost identical burn rate to H380. I have only been "experimenting" with this rife in the past few months.. I had it since early spring but ended up having additional work done to it that cost me most of the year...So I am now in full swing to try different bullets and powders etc... I will eventually get around to Varget as it has always been a great powder for the 7mm-08.. As I progress thru varying and different loads I will drop the results here in this thread.. Feel free to comment or do the same... Ben...

7-08 on a savage action. Was my 22-250 varmit, unscrewed the barrel screwed the 7-08 on built some 139 hornaday spire point bt. It's now set up for hunting, sighted in at 200 yards. It groups just over 1 inch 5 shots.Lasts week took it out to 600 yards, dialed some elevation in the scope, took a sighter, then adjusted and went to hitting an 8x12 inch plate of steel every shot.7 in a row.22 inch sporter barrel I bought off this site.Varget powder,6-18 nikon buckmaster, egw 20 moa base. Just playing around, but all my Savages shoot smoking bad.6CM,7mmSAUM,22-250,308....Remingtons for sale

Ain't no doubt about it>> Savages shoot excellent! My son just bought a Savage Precision Long Range Varminter in 22-250 with a 1 in 9 twist. We just broke the barrel in with 75gr. A-Maxs and IMR 4007 powder. We saw some pretty interesting groups, so we made up a few "batches" with the loads that "appear" to shoot good while breaking in the barrel... The news>> The groups WHILE BREAKING IN THE BARREL>>were at 200 yards and NONE went over 1 and 1/8th inches!! You don't have to sell me on Savages>> I am SOLD! Sunday I am going out with my 7mm-08 again and I will post the results...

Fella's glad I found this thread! I had a 280 in mind but the action will not let me seat the heavy bullets where I want them so gonna try the 7-08, pretty much just a hunting rifle but I'm a LR guy so the high bc bullets I like. Does anyone think that 2700fps with a 175gr. is possible? I'll have a 26" 1-9 twist barrel and I have the throating reamer so I can get the bulets out there to get a bit more case capacity. I'll have to keep an eye on this thread. Later,

Kirk

I have a 1-9 on my 7mm saum, 180 jlk's shoot great,also 162 amaxes. What I understand in a 7-08 with a 1-9 162 amaxes shoot well, not sure about 175's. If I hear or read anything I'll let you know.

About your 7mm-08 and 175gr. @ 2700 f.p.s. question: I am a BIG 7mm-08 fan and a BIG 7mm fan in general. I have owned "more than a few 7mm Rem Mags in my life and it is difficult to get them to move 175 gr bullets much past 2900f.p.s. I have not tried to shoot that heavy of a bullet for hunting in a 7mm-08 and I would think that IF it could be done,I am quite sure anything is possible) your brass would be worthless after a shot or two. However, having said that, if you were inclined to attempt 2700f.p.s. with 175's I would try two different powders
1.) RL-19 and 2.) IMR 4831... Both powders "usually" make the most out of velocity in many rifles / calibers... If you had an action that allowed the bullets to be seated out so that the base of the bullet is not past the neck-line,not into the shoulder area) and stoke up a good "high-velocity / slow burning" powder you j-u-s-t might get it... It may be worth a try.. Nothing ventured>> nothing gained>> but make sure you are using a slow powder because pressures will rise!

Thanks fella's, I'm burning Retumbo behind 107smk's in my 243 and it doing 3050fps not screaming but it does what it's supposed too :-) yeah I have been kicking around the velocity issue and I may just opt out of the 7-08 and go with the 280! I have access to both reamers and I'm starting with a barrel blank and granted I have many options I'd like to stay with the .473 boltface, I know go with the 284 but truth I don't want to mess with the feed rails call me lazy it's probably true. Good thread saved me from having to start one. Later,

Kirk

Do you have a 280 Ackley Improved reamer?? That would definately give the 2700++ you are looking for in the 175's>>>with good brass life to boot!! Good luck...

Hey guys! Just checking to see if there was any more development with the 162 Amax's and IMR4007. I'm working up a load on my Savage based 7mm-08 and looking for all the info I can get on loads. I was working mostly with Varget and have developed a good load at 40.8 and 42.0 with the 162 Amax.

Thanks
Mike
