7mm-08 168gr. Accuracy load data

Hi Guys! I shoot alot with a .308 and there is MUCH "accuracy load" data concerning that calber. However, there is 'nary a thing I can find about 168gr. accuracy data on a 7mm-08. I know that "Sierra" has an "accuracy load" but I was hoping there may be some "site" that may have plenty of accuracy loads and "tips" and "favorite" type stuff. I have been loading it this entire summer and although I can get "reasonable" groups, I can't seem to get "close" to the consistancy I get with my .308. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shootdots you might look here and compare what you have shot and what they are showing and get some help. I'm working on a 708 too and just haven't had time to go shoot any.Click Here

Howdy James: I have been searching for good accuracy loads and upon compilation and review I have come up with some ideas. I am going to shoot 168 and 180gr Bergers, once my riflew is finished). There are many "slower" powders that shoot well, however, your "medium" powders are what produce extreme accuracy. I have come to the conclusion, obviously without personal testing) after much research, that RL-15 and Varget and "possibly" VV N150 are THEE powders of choice for the type of accuracy I am looking for. When I say "accuracy" I mean 3/4" or LESS at 200 yards. Many of the "groupings" I will be looking for will be sub 1/2" at 200 yds. This is the sort of accuracy I am after... Hope that helps out guys... Thanks for the input, I do appreciate it!

Havn't shot any yet but my starting load for my Krieger barreled stiller is as follows
sorted and prepped winchester case
CCI BR 2 primer
Hornady 162 gr A-max Moly coated
and 42.5 grains of H4350
should be good for about 2650 to 2700 fps with a 27" tube

SilverEagle, Is that a typo where you mentioned the BR-4? Br-2 s are the reg. large rifle primer and BR-4 s are the small rifle primer. Just checking man. Bill

Well Guys.... The time is almost here... I spoke with my riflesmith yesterday and my 7mm-08 will be ready next week. My scope, a NightForce NXS 12-42 w/FCH-3) will be here Monday. I will break in the barrel, and start the "game". I have been searching High and Low and I have settled on 168 Bergers, they will initially be seated 3K INTO the lands) and at least on the surface it appears, from purely an accuracy standpoint, that RL-15 may be the "powder of choice" for that application. Since it is already "warming up" down here in Texas, it may be a bit slower in finding THEE load. However, I will periodically keep everyone posted on how this rifle and loads are doing... Thanks for all your help guys>> I do appreciate it!! Ben.....

Hey guys... I got the scope last night! The CH-3 is the BEST precision crosshair I have ever seen on a scope... It has an EXTREMELY fine crosshair that does NOT quite "cross"..It stops just a wee tad apart and a "floating" dot, smaller than a 1/8th min. dot by far)sits between the crosshairs. It looks awesome. The scope is clear and bright and when the rifle gets done, according to the riflesmith >> THIS week) I will mount the scope and break the barrel in and then begin to develope a load.. I was so awestruck about the crosshair of that scope, I thought I would let y'all know incase anyone was interested in a NightForce for PRECISION shooting...

Well the rifle is together, sans the Arnold Jewell trigger. I took it out yesterday, after breaking in the barrel last week) to see how some "probable" groups might pan out.. However, the wind was 15 to 25mph>>not real conducive to shooting small groups at 200 yds. I did shoot 3 groups though and the 7mm 168 Bergers are incredible in the wind! Those high,.654) B.C. bullets do make a huckeva difference. One of the loads printed right at 1"!! Mind you this is the first time out for load developement... The load was,7mm-08) 168gr. Bergers seated 5K INTO the lands, 38.3 grains of RL-15 using a Fed 210 primer. I am going to go out for some real developement Sunday,Lord willing) and if I get something worth reporting, I'll do so..

The NightForce Scope is incredible! The .88 min target dot is awesome! However, all is not well... The "nose-heavy" barrel caused "vertical stringing" and I could NOT get rid of it. So as of now, the rifle is at "the smiths" getting a DEEP flute job. However, the "stringing" was only about 1 and1/8th inches in length with almost NO side to side variance. Which means that if I can get rid of that stringing, it should shoot well under 3/4">>> mind you this is at 200yds.. The rifle seems to really like the Hornady 162 A-Max's and 40 grains of RL-15. Once we get the rifle back, I will once again resume load developement.

My 7mm-08 stiller/krieger/ross, will post a 3 shot group at 100 yards off the bench at .113"
I shot the june ORPA match at Perry and the rifle performed as expected at 1000 yards, only thing holding it back was me. I need more practice on the 1K line
with my old rig I was posting low expert scores, with the new rig, i have posted high expert scores, and am ready to make the jump to master's scores

I realy have to give this cartridge credit, a lot of shooters had doughts on the 7-08 at 1K, but from what I can tell, it has a solid and lasting place on the 1000 yard line

I only hunt with my 7/08 so maybe my question does not belong here? But why are you guys so hung up on the heavy bullets? I keep my game killing shots to around 400yds and both my 7/08s leave them DRT! On paper, <.5 at 100 yards is easy. I am using either 120gr or 140gr and Win760. All 140gr bullets I shoot almost go into the same hole, the 120s are TSX's and they do a real number on game up to and including black bear. Good post here guys, lets keep it going.

Doug

To answer your question Doug, heavier bullets do not lose their velocity as quickly as lighter bullets.
At 1000 yards for example, a 162 grain bullet fired out a 7mm-08 will have more velocity, and less wind drift than a 120 bullet, even though the 120 bullet had a higher muzzle velocity

Hey guys.... My rifle is still at the 'smith waiting for a "flute-job" ... The rifle is way too "nose-heavy" and strings, vertically) the shots... The 'smith is waiting for a new fluting tool and will then do my rifle. However, it still shoots about 1" and 1/8 to 1/4" stung vertically with very little lateral movement. Once I "cure" this stringing problem it should shoot WELL UNDER 1" at the 200 yard range.. I shall keep you posted...

The person that told you that the bbl being heavy cause the bullets to string vertically is totally off base. I would be wary of any other advice from that source.

That source is none other than Speedy Gonzales>>well know and huge record holder for both Light and Heavy varmint Benchrest circles..

I see, but do you mean to tell me that you are using a 7/08 to hunt at 1000 yards, or are you just making the bell ring? I guess the 7/08 is fine for hunting at that range, just bet ya there's better 7mm's for the task at hand.

Thanks

Doug
