7BR

How come you don't hear much about the 7BR on this forum? Lots of 22BR, 6 Wildcats and Improved, 30BR, but no 7BR. Is it because it is not terribly accurate?

Kory,

I used to shoot a 7BR in Silhouette competition. It shot well in that type of competition. What limits the 7MM's today in other more group oriented venues is the lack of good custom 7mm bullets. Specifically for the 7BR in the 100 or so grain weight range. Also because the 6MM bullet is about max when it comes to the standard 6BR case, although some are having some luck with the 6.5BR and hopefully they will chime in here.

Mr. Dreever is right in that the 7BR probably enjoys the most popularity among the Hunter Silhoeutte crowd. The 7BR gives light recoil with adequate ram knockdown performance and it is legal for Hunter.

If someone made excellent 7mm flatbase bullets I am sure the 7mm would shoot every bit as good as the .30BR does. In score shooting the 30BR would be cutting a bigger hole and would be more suitable. Just go to benchrest central and search the archives about the 6PPCs vs the .30BRs for this shooting discipline.

The 7mm also has too much recoil to use in point blank benchrest group shooting. In the long range game you could not get enough velocity out of a high BC bullet to warrant choosing this chambering over others.

Hi Troy,

What is "point blank benchrest group shooting"? I have not heard that term before.

The term is used as slang to distinguish between 600 and 1000 yard bechrest and 1-300 yard benchrest. The 600-1000 is long range and the 1-300 would be considered point blank. I guess I should have said shooting were the object is to shoot the smallest cluster of shots possible whether is be for a 5 shot aggregate score, a five shot group or a ten shot group. I can see why the anti gun crowd is against benchrest: the whole notion of shooting large and small groups sounds a bit un PC :D
