788 Rem bolt, End of story

Removed the barrel. Commercial Win 243 case with a flat primer.

Used a brass punch to remove the bolt. first couple of inches was easy then jammed. One of the front lugs on the bolt had sheared from rear to front and lodged against the bolt body and receiver. Drove the bolt out and found the remains of the lug.

Put the bbl back at about 10 deg off original and glued a 'do no shoot-overpressure' onto the receiver.

Anyone have a 788 Bolt for sale?

Anyone need a 243 788 Mag, stock, or barrel?

How does the barrel look? My son has one and is pitted. I tried to buy another and it was pitted also, sent it back.

What happened? There are 9 locking lugs on the rear of that bolt.
It is a very strong action.
I know the bolts have some spring to them but shearing a lug? Was that a handload or some bad factory ammo?

The problem is that the likelyhood of all 9 being in good contact is infintesimal. It could easily be that only the one that sheared off was in good contact.

Flat primer indicate ahot load or excessive space.
I'm wondering wich one it is.
I have one i used for Benchrest and all 9 were lapped in before the rebarrel. It still shoots like crazy too.
I did have other problems like thaat cheap trigger hanger.
The bolt handle is no jewel either but it is functional.
Those are just pressed in. For the money at the time they were a very good buy.

Barrel exterior and interior looked good. I did not run a patch through the barrel. The open sights were also removed.

I will ask again if they want to sell the parts. What will you give for the barrel shipped? old doug

Cartridge was a Win factory 243.

I'll go $125 for all the parts EXCEPT the barrel. Will provide FFL and pay whatever method you prefer.

Last one I bought was $50. I would have you push a patch down the barrel and check it for me. Don't want it if it is pitted. One on the gun is, but shoots 'minute of Deer' right now.
