7828ssc in 6.5x284

Has anybody out there tried IMR 7828ssc in a 6.5x284 yet? I have been wanting to try it but no one has any around where I live, and if I have to order it and pay the haz mat fee, I am going to get at least 8 # and would hate to have that much and it not work. I would think it would work well as it should meter well and should fill the case better than 4831 or 4350.

Hey,

I have been wondering that myself; I kept the first magazine article that showed the new powder before it came out to remember to look for it.

From what I have read it burns just a small hair slower than RL22 and N165 and right on par with H1000.

I just saw it in Scheel's a couple of weeks ago for the first time and will be trying it out as soon as I run out of my N165 and RL 22.

If you haven't tried it out by then I will let you know; should be middle of next month sometime.

I ran a Quickload simulation on it,for a standard .284). It looks like it would offer 100% load density in a .284 with a 180-gr VLD, seated with .25 of shank in the neck.

For a 6.5-284, with a 140 Berger VLD seated in the lands, it looks like about 97% load density is about max. If you jump the bullets, you MIGHT be able to get up to 99%.

My guess is it might work better for the 7s and 30s.

Sounds like you might be right on that; and my rifle is currently shooting in the mid six avg group size with RL 22 so there is really no need to experiment.

But, no one has ever accused me of being the brighest bulb burning on the tree before either so I am sure the itch will have to be scratched!

The moderator is correct on the burn rate being too slow using the 7828 in a 6.5-284. The powders that works best are RL-22, H-4831, H-4350 and VV160.

Just this past weekend I was testing my 6.5-284 at 600 yds and myself and another shooter were consistently shooting groups from .875-1.2" using a CR 140 grn bullet.
