75 Grain, 25-06

Anybody shooting the 75 grain Hornady V-Max in a 25-06 with a 1in10 twist barrel?? If so, please tell me about your results?? Thanks, Tom.

Howdy !

Can't speak directly to the .25-06 experience however.....

As .25 cal 75s go, Sierra's 75 out-shot the other offerings during tests I performed before the advent of "V"-Max bullets. I was using a .250-3000 at the time.

Sierra 75s were a " death ray " on groundhogs when shot from that .250-3000.
I can only imagine what might be possible when shot from a .25-06 ?!

With regards,

I have shot both the 75 gr VMax and the 75gr HP Sierras out of my .25-06 Rem 700 Sendero SF II, which I think is a 1 in10" twist. The rifle is factory except for lightening the trigger pull(X Mark Pro trigger). The gun seems to like some loads and hate others, then again I don't get to shoot enough to really critically evaluate each load or to maintain good shooting technique. Currently, I haven't shot for over a year because I moved to a place (eastern WA) that doesn't have a range nearby. I have a bunch of these promising loads loaded up but I will have to wait until I have time to drive to a range often enought to practice before shooting them.

I have shot these loads at three different 100 yd ranges in KS, SD, & central OR during several different seasons/years. Sorry, no on game experience. All groups are 5 shots at 100 yds from a bench. The most recent groups are listed first and sequentially get older. If I had a decent 3 or 4 shot group and think I pulled the last shot/s I will list the 3 or 4 shot group. I usually then loaded a new batch and reshot a particular load if I thought I screwed it up the first time. Take it for what you will.

75 gr Sierra HP COL: 3.071" Bullet is seated 0.020" from lands. CCI BR2 primer; necksized Remington factory brass not sorted or prepped other than trimmed to length and case mouths chamfered/deburred

49gr IMR 4895: 1.008"(0.673" 4 shot group)
56gr IMR 4350: 0.619"
50gr Varget: 0.382"; 1.128: (0.208 3 shot group)
60gr IMR 4831: 1.843"
61gr Reloder 19: 1.061"

75 gr Hornaday V-Max COL: 3.183" Bullet is seated 0.020" from lands. CCI BR2 primer; necksized Remington factory brass not specially sorted or prepped other than trimmed to length and case mouths chamfered/deburred

48gr IMR 4895: 0.886"; 2.243" (0.182 3 shot group); 1.293" (0.743" 4 shot)
50gr Varget: 0.858"; 1.757"
55gr IMR 4831: 0.999"
56.7gr IMR 4350: 1.193" (0.983" 4 shot)

My particular gun seems to shoot the 85 gr Ballistic Tips more consistently over different powders. Alot of loads with that bullet will shoot around 0.85" with a few dipping down to around half inch.

Good Luck

Tom,
Back when you could still buy just a Remington 700 barreled action, our friend Bill on Reeves avenue ordered me one in 25-06. I sent this action to Hart and had a match grade 25" varmint taper barrel installed with a 10 twist. Hart then sent it to Tom Meridith for me and Tom pillar bedded and put it in a McMillan hunter stock. I don't put targets in here to show off but I'll tell you the gun is really accurate. Now to your question, about 75 grn V-Max bullets, I've killed several groundhogs with them and they group so so in my gun, my gun likes 85 grain bullets better, maybe cause they are longer. However, just recently I shot some of Sierra's new 70 grn BlitzKing bullets and they shot super good, they shot in .4 to .7 range for 3 shot groups. Best velocity I get with 70 to 85 grain bullets is with VVN160, ReL 17 and Winchester 760. Just Wednesday I shot two groundhogs using 70 grn Sierra's over 56.0 grns 760 Winchester for 3,800 fps. If you need more loads that I have cronographed and are accurate in my gun, just let me know.

Been shooting HS Precision 25-06 1x10 twist 26 inch barrel since 1998. Consistent sub 1/4 to1/2 groups despite 3000 rounds down the tube. IMR 4064 52 grains with Hornady 75 grain Vmax at 3800 fps. IMR tends to be a bit temperature sensitive above 85 degrees.

Good luck

I have shot the 75 gr VMax out of my 1-10 twist 257 wby Mag, and they shot surprisingly accurately…….They vaporize crows at 250 yards, i swear there were black feathers still falling by the time i drove down there Lol. ;)

Just a note to say to lawrence,I loved those flat base 75 grain winchester bullets, they shot out standing in my 6mm chambering. The old winny bullets are golden in my book, but alas they are all gone now. What a shame.
