700 striker hand off

I've got a 700 equipped with a Jewell trigger that is exhibiting an interesting problem. First of all, when the bolt is closed, the cam on the lugs pulls the bolt body forward, increasing the striker cock by about .040 from its position in the notch with the bolt open. This is felt as a noticeable increase in effort to close the bolt that lets off once the striker is resting on the sear and the lugs pass the camming surface. The second problem is that the striker follows the bolt down if the bolt is run quickly. It does this with the trigger sear engagement at the minimum, as well as with lots of engagement. There is less tendency to follow when the sear engagement is adjusted to have considerable creep.

I'm hoping with some insight from you folks, I can get it setup to run the bolt quickly with the trigger adjusted for minimal creep. My Surgeons will do this, my Howa will do this, I don't see why my remington shouldn't be able to.

Thanks!

I would be checking for some foreign body, maybe a piece of primer, caught up in the bolt ways on the action lug corner where camming occurs. One of those action cleaning tools could work. So could dropping the barrel out.

I had thought of some setback in the action due to an earlier issue, but 40 thou is one heck of a lot.

Just checking. Are you saying that the striker increases by .040 until you pass camming, then sets back? That's the situation commented on, but if it stays up the .040, then it's a different issue.

As you rotate the bolt the cocking piece/firing pin has to move rearward as it comes out of the retention notch in the bolt body.
You probably need to increase the pull weight of the trigger. Then start over again adjusting the sear engagement.

The striker starts in the notch (proud of the shroud about .006"), it then climbs out of the notch (displacing it aft .025" further, to .031" displacement aft of the shroud). From that position to fully closing the bolt, it is again displaced aft to a position of .052" aft of the shroud.

If there's debris up there it's welded to the lug abutment. I'll have to take the barrel off and check.

Trigger is set at 1.5 pounds with spring "A". It's not some 4oz trigger.

Edited for clarity

The .040" cock on closing motion is normal. The action was designed that way according to Stuart Otteson's book, "The Bolt Action" pp 137.

Sounds like cock on close. Sounds like the firing pin block is not holding.
Manually depress the pin block to see if it holds. Make sure its travel is
smooth when you pull the trigger to release it. Flush and blow it out .
If its not debris. I had a sear return problem in an HVR trigger that would
do the same thing.

Almost every action out there is designed with cock on close. Your Remington included. So thats normal. However, I do time actions if you want a smooth hand off without sacrificing pin fall. The second issue, are you just opening then closing when this happens? Actions with a lot of cock on close require a little bit of rearward bolt travel to let the sear reset. So if you are not pulling the bolt back a little before closing it, thats normal too. If you are, then you most likely have an issue with that trigger. A jewel should be able to handle 2-3 oz. If worked they are good to 1.5oz. Probably just needs to be cleaned.

With your bolt closed after firing (or dry firing) if there is cock on close, which you apparently have, the cocking piece is forward of the position that it needs to be so that the top lever of the trigger can rise into position so that it can engage the cocking piece. This is not a problem when operating the action with ammunition because the bolt has to be opened to load the rifle, but if you raise and lower the bolt handle without some slight rearward motion the cocking piece will prevent the top lever of the trigger from rising into a position that will allow it to engage.

If you have never taken your trigger apart, get a hold of a set of factory instructions, that should have a drawing of the internals, a Phillips screwdriver that is a good fit for the screws, and carefully take your trigger apart and clean it. If I can, you can. Just work on a single thickness of towel so that no parts can bounce or roll, and work far enough from the edge of the table that everything will stay on the table if you drop it. Have good light, turn off your phone and computer, focus, and take your time. After you have it back together, you can give it a squirt of lighter fluid, blow out the excess, remount, and readjust it, from scratch by the book.

+1 for Dave Tooley. When Ein wrote that he was using (A) spring with 1.5 pull
It did not sound like a trigger return problem. The HVR has a pivoting sear nose
that is captivated by the end (leg) of a long torsion spring. I have seen this arrangement
become problematic in the past.
