700 SPS trigger - sucks - are they all like this?

A new shooter at work just got a left handed 700 SPS Varmint in .223. I couldn't pull the trigger. He showed me the instructions where it says the factory trigger is set at 3# or greater at the factory. It can be adjusted by the little allen screw in the trigger. I got out my trigger gauge and it was 6# 10 oz. We could not get it down to even 6# with the screw out so far it was ready to fall out. The adjustment screw did not make hardly any difference.

Is this the new 'normal'?

The best fix is to get a good aftermarket trigger. Shilen and Timney are good plus there are many others.

Lawyers responding to irresponsible journalism has resulted in a trigger a heavy as a tank.

Lots of good aftermarket triggers out there in a variety of price ranges. It is an upgrade you will appreciate and really should be done to almost all rifles.

The spring that the screw depresses is stuck. If you take it to your gunsmith he will have to take it apart to fix it. While he has it apart, a little polishing will slick it up. It will then work like it is suppose to and be around 3 pounds. You might want to remove the screw completely as it will no longer be needed. The spring is too large to come out the hole.

I just bought one for my son. In live in CA so I am within the infamous 10 day waiting period before I can take her home. I did hold and feel the rifle at my Gunsmith/FFL's shop and noted the atrociously heavy trigger pull. SO I asked him to adjust it to a lighter trigger pull say, 2 - 3 lbs. My Smith called me today and said he had to call Remington because it wouldn't adjust down much. He called Remington and was told you can adjust screw #2, but adjusting the other or breaking the seal voids the warranty. My Smith suggested I break in the rifle and make sure she functions alright. THEN we'll try and readjust the standard trigger OR replace it. I believe we have the legal beagles to thanks for this mess. But it's nothing that can't be fixed...with a replacement trigger.

P.S. I'll pass along ninehorses comments.
