700 Remington short action

Am about to try and build a super accurate rifle. I just bought a Remington 700 short action that was originally a 243, want to have the action trued etc. Also want a 28" heavy SS barrel. I need advise on what caliber would be suited to this action (Bolt Face)? I can order a stock from Richardsons or you may suggest a company to me The rifle will be used for Deer long range from a rest as well as some target work. Will be most grateful LOU

Morning Guy,

I gotta advise ya that your question is "pretty general" and may not get alot of answers.

However if you could narrow it down to say: Preferred caliber & bullet weight, Distance expecting to shoot, Want to stay with std bolt face or willing to open up for WSM/SAUMs. If you were to narrow it down a tish, I am sure you'll get better responses.

Based on just what you posted I would tell ya to look to the 7mm/08 or the std 308.

Good luck on your venture.

Seeing you mentioned deer at a distance, I think you would be well served with a straight .284 Winchester with the bolt face you have... You could open the bolt face to a mag face and use any of the new short action 7mm, but I don't see it as all that much better...
Contact Joel Russo for your stock work, he does it up right..

Rod, yes my post is pretty much standard. I think I would tend to go with either the 6.5-284, or the 6BR, or maybe a WSM Caliber,243WSM or 7MMWSM. I hunted for years long before the WSM's were introduced. Preacher I appreciate the tip on the stock work. It may seem sort of strange that I would seek all this at my age. But recently I had my old faithful 7MM Magnum rebarreled with a shillen match grade barrel, action trued etc. It was a tack driver long ago but after numerrous shots the barrel lost it's pazass. And after the new barrel it is again a dynamite shooter. The barrel was contoured to fit the fajen stock that I had on the rifle. So after all that, I felt a rifle of the likes I want to build is in order. I was always satisfied for out of the box rifles but I am in a better position and can afford to persue this sort of venture. Thanks Again Lou

Here's your order of business. Some touches are just for "cosmetic" reasons.

1) have action blue printed, bolt bushed, firing pin bushed. Install Jewell trigger. Flute bolt. Shifter Knob?
2) Top end barrel, 28 inches, medium palma contour at lightest, chambered in 260 remington, 1-8 or faster twist.
3) Mcmillan Htg stock in desert camo (w/adj. comb) , sniper fill, inletted for bottom metal you intend to use (there's many choices beyond the Remington), extra swivel stud for bipod use.
4) Nightforce NXS scope, with reticle of choice, 20 MOA base, badger rings.
5) all metal (including scope) cerakoted in color of choice
6) Load Berger VLDs.
7) Go kill stuff.

This will be a pig to carry anywhere, but you'll be able to whack deer out to very long range.....

We all have opinions. I would not waste the money on the factory receiver. Use it as is and you will never know the difference. If you want a good receiver, buy one of the Remington clones. About the same price as redoing a factory and has a better resale value. A short action is a little short to take advantage of the good 6.5 bullets in a 6.5X284. Use a 260 or 284. I personally don't like the ugly big knobs on a bolt.

Butch,
To be TacTi Cool you have to have a fresh paint job and a Hurst/Muncie shifter knob to properly operate the weapon system!!

Pictures of the system by the pool help also!

Great advise. There I go again half cocked. Bought the action thinking that was the way to go DAH. At my age I should look before I leap. Well only paid $300 shipped so it will make a fair to good rifle maybe 243AI. OK now that you suggested a better action. What is a fairly good action for one who lives on SS? Don't want to take a second mortgage on my home. But don't get me wrong I am not destitute, unless O'Bamma care sends me there. (What Was America Thinking?) >:( Well that's another post. Back to the future. OK I need advise on the affore mentioned before I got side tracked for my Love of O'Bama >:( All seriousness aside, let me get back to a better subject that I got off of. Need that advise on an action that will be for best price and accuracy for the $$$$$$$. HELP Lou

Morning Lou,

For a great price for a awesome short action, You can pick up Stiller or Surgeon 700 clones for 775-800$ I am saving my pennies for one right now too... Before ya balk, you would have to dump 250-400 into that remmy sa to accurize it & you can sell it for 350 in a heartbeat. And bada bing, you got a great custom action, better than the accurized 700 that will have far better resale for almost the same amount...

Dont look at the BAT's, they are addicting and Preacher Man is right, Russo will do ya right..

BAT actions are the way to go if you a want custom action...
They are slick as a greased pig...
Nothing wrong with a tweaked 700,XP-100, XR-100, 600, or the 660 action though... You will have twice the money in a BAT action...
Unless your just keeping up with the Joneses a Remington action will do what needs done... I have them both, and like em all if they shoot, and mine do....

You can blueprint a Remington action the right way or you can half azz it. Below is one done right and even with help from Buddys and gunsmiths prices on parts and doing some of it myself, I have about $850 in it. That includes the $200 I payed for the receiver. It was not a smart move on my part.

Well sorta put the action on the back burner for the time being as I saw a Savage in a store I just hafta' buy. It's a 6BR Varmit and target Rifle all rolled into one? so I have been told? It's Retails for 1,395.00 they have a tag on it $999.00. It is the Rifle that the shooting team took to the British matches and won quite a few with this very same rifle. They have a picture of the 4 who shot this good, with suposedly a rifle right out of the box? No modifications(I find hard to believe) but a member said they know of several members who have them, including himself and they swear it's a shooter? So on thier advise I am picking it up tomprrow. Wise or unwise decision, it will be mine. I too have seen a few right ups on this rifle but never figured I needed one, but have since joined a club that has ranges up to and including 1000 yards. Never before have I ever had a range such as this. But now I figure at 72 years young, (what the hay") to term a phrase from an old time commedian. One thing about the rifle caught my eye was the ability to be able to change barrels with the proper tools to do the job, and a lot of help from my friends (You Guys) so now to save my jingle to get a night force scope, more than I ever thought I would pay for a scope. Up until now leupold was good enough. But you guys convinced me I have just got to put one on the new rifle. Well for the time being I will have to settle for one of my 4-12 Leupolds till I can come up with enough denero's, dracma's,pounds pecos, you get the idea one of those foreign countrys that own our banking system with the head Muslim, Do I need to spell it out. Well enough of my ranting more to follow you can be sure if I don't get arrested for talking about the head liberal? Liberal leader, supposed to be our Leader. Hahaha. Lou

lou,

Ya made a good call on the savage purchase, for the money.
