700 rem. longrange trigger adjustments

I just picked up a 700 rem in 300 win mag ,it is what they call there long range model. My smith told me the triggers were horrible so he switch it out with a Shilen. I brought it home and was looking it over, appears the adjustment screws are all filled with something ? Has anyone had any luck working on these or are they just a throw away?

If its a newer gun with the X Mark Pro yes they are filled with a lacquer type substance. the X mark pro trigger has the adjustment screw on the trigger shoe. most despise these triggers BUT they can be made serviceable with a simple spring change from Ernie The Gunsmith. as long as you can get the weight adjustment screw out of the housing.

one can make this a 2-2.5 lb trigger with no creep with this simple spring change.

If it's the older style trigger it can also be made decent with a spring kit from Ernie BUT one needs to know the fundamentals of trigger function and adjustment in order to do so.

My XMP trigger is set at 1 1/2 pounds with no creep and no spring change. At that weight, it is a s good as any trigger I have. WH

Thanks Will,I will look up the XMP, Having problems with the Shilen I had installed.(slam fires)

I use a lot of Shilens, and it sounds like the sear engagement is adjusted a little too fine. Should be a five minute fix and I'd be happy to walk you through it. Please PM me if I can help.

Sounds good Will,I'm ready when you are. Should I take pull weight up some also? Maybe two pounds

OP,
SEEK a PROFESSIONAL for ASSISTANCE,since you are in need of tutoring.

(And not the parts changing 'plumber that installed your Shilen trigger group w/o verifying safe operation)

XMP triggers are throw away. If you don't want to throw it away, you can send it to me for free and I'll throw it away for you ;)

Not sure what happened with my PLUMBER as he has built me two match winning rifles ? (I guess we all have our days) I do plan on throwing the XMP away but need to do it were it never gets found

I haven't touched a Shilen trigger before. Thought about getting one years ago but never went through with it. Ive had issues with Timney and Rifle Basix triggers losing safe levels of sear engagement after being set to their lowest pull weights. Some triggers just cant be made very safe when set to their lowest pull weights.

I personally like the Jewell HVR triggers. Little more expensive than the Shilen, but can be set from 1.5 oz all the way to 3.5 lbs. Best pull range on the market IMO. Set the pull weight super light (2 to 4 oz.) for load testing at the bench, then crank it up heavier before you go hunting. So light it can also be used on competition rifles. Can buy them with or without safeties and bolt releases, and top or bottom safety lever options. Extremely versatile trigger that works very well for all applications.
