700 pre prefix, 7 digit, c prefix etc.

etc. I figured out a 700 action is not JUST a 700 action ???. Where does one locate info on the meaning of all these different types ? A short explanation would suffice for now. Thank you

Call Remington, The C has to do with the year it was made. Hope yhat helps

T 700

I think they started the prefix thing in the 1970's. The earlier ones were made a bit nicer and the triggers are easier to smooth up.The surface had a high lustre finish and then the finishes in the late 80's went to bead blast with bluing abd black oxide. The earlier ones had a little better fit in the parts. The barrels were supposedly more accurate, however I have 3 1990's(late 90's) model VS and they all shoot real well. They also made stainless and deluxe models with engraving on them.

Six digit serial numbers to circa 1968, then the seven digit numbers to about 73, until suddenly the prefiix appeared, c-prefix started around 1990 I believe.

Early 700s differ a bit in some dimensions; or so I've been told.

Nicest 700s I've owned have been the B and C prefix guns. Superb machineshop work and finishes, great triggers.

Butch, most don't want to believe that but, those of us, who actually work on them, have found that very little has to be done, to the newer actions, to true them up. Some "High Tech" gunbuilders are charging as much as $500.00 to true a Rem 700. When Remington re-tooled they really got better. Just my opinion as usual.

With one exception-
Late model Seven's, current production G prefix & S/S receivers being the worst, have a step to right of the extraction cam & a step in the bottom forward corner of the bolt handle cut that needs to be blended if tighter bolt handle LOCATION tolerances are the objective.

The current production OEM Remington bolt handles "short cam" extraction cam are hopeless on any bolt w/ a case head larger than .378"(17,.222.,.223)

Trigger groups haven't changed once the left over 2 piece 722/721 sear/safety bars & short firing pin shrouds(plugs) were used up in the mid/late 60's.
The chrome will peel on mid to late 80's sear/safety bars, the matte nickel plated units last a life time!
