700 long action for what??

I've got a Rem BDL in Rem 7mm mag. What can I build on this action that would be ballistically superior to the 7mm Rem [lower pressures, high coeffecient bullets, 1000yd accuracy, good selection of qualty brass, blah blah blah, etc., etc.]. I would rather not have to change the bolt although I like what I hear about the 6.5x284 and some of the newer 7mms. I'm thinkin something for long shots at antelope, deer, chucks, sort of a combo hunter and varminter that I can shoot at distances of 5-600yds plus and get sub moa groups. Any advice/ideas to help me start a gun build?

I am not the best person to answer this question but I asked the same question last week to Jim Hart and his response was the 7 STW or the 308 baer or 30 Hart for the 1k accuracy. He told me the 6.5x284 would not reliably feed as a hunting round. Something about the length of the case is between a short action and long action.
I am sure you will get better responses than this because I don't have the experience I am only repeating an opinion.

That 7RM will out perform a whole lot of stuff on the market right now. I have killed a ton of stuff with it and could not be happier. Ive even shot Mule deer right there in your home state. When I was looking to make a one mile shot on a 2' steel plate I was going to shoot my 6.5X284 but it turns out that the 7mm Rem Mag and a 162 A-Max,deadly on deer) at 2973 has the same exact balistic trajectory as the 6.5X284.
Have you ever shot over a mile accuratly? I have with the 7mm Rem Mag.,1774yds) And for pure wind bucking try the 180 Berger. Type in these bullets into a balistics program and you will see it does not give up hardly anyting to all the voodoo stuff on the market.
But then again it is a plain ole remmy and not as cool sounding as the 7STW

Norma Brass is available.

Just a thought, good luck

I think for what your wanting to do a plain rem 7mag would work just fine. its much easier on brass than the 7stw and with a good barrel is very accurate.just my opinion___treeman

I certainly don't have anything against the 7 Rem mag it's just that most of my shootin is year round [varmints, pedators etc.] and I'm lookin for a cartridge alternative to use on this magnum action that would be a little less hard on a barrel and using a little less powder while retaining real good down range ballistics [400yds plus for fun]. I want to shoot it[in a years time] also. I'm pobably gonna have to give up the magnum action to do that?? Again, can the 7 mag fit THOSE perimeters well? I think I know the answer to that question, but maybe I'm missing something??
