700 in 300 wsm ?

My son has acquired a rem 700 in 300 wsm from a friend a lady that husband passed. He missed out on a couple 308’s but again it was a gift ! So he wants to sight in and hunt with it. I’m willing to put leupold scope on it if he buys ammo. I can not tolerate recoil but he is young and excited about the gift. In my eyes i see a barrel burner and a ridiculous cost of ammo but rifle was free. So that’s what I’m working with and i expect him to buy enough factory ammo just for the brass and to sight in. My questions are - if he will hunt whitetail in NC then what bullet and powder ? I have 4350 and am thinking 150 165 gr unless something else suggested. Rifle has a factory break that I’m not looking forward to listening to while he sights in ! Regardless i want to help him produce enough rounds to sight in and have enough to hunt with. Way overkill for around here but again free rifle. Any suggestions appreciated

I dont find the wsm to be a barrel burner at all. 4350 probably will work ok with those lighter bullets and you can find a slower node to reduce recoil.

And brakes are not bad with proper hearing protection.

I have bullets for 30.06 bar left over and will share and powder primers too. But he will have to furnish brass Hopefully from purchased ammo ! The rifle has a barrel labeled G A precision ? In 300 wsm. I samuel this is not a factory barrel ?

GA Precision is one of the best builders out there. Recoil shouldn't be bad with that contour barrel and a brake.
You'd be better off getting a suppressor though!

I have a SS R700 300 wsm and i use it for whitetail and will use it for elk someday too. With a brake you will find it to be quite a bit more pleasant to shoot. I have had lots of success with Norma 180g bondstrike and reloads with my combination of 212 eldx and superformance powder.

Thar setup with the HS precision stock and custom barrel looks like a real winner.

I do recommend plugs and muffs if you are next to him when shooting. Have fun.

fellas i appreciate the input a lot. Never heard of ga precision but now i know to appreciate rifle more ! Son was shocked at price of ammo but he just graduated college and won’t start work for a couple of weeks so he is broke ! It’s killing him to not be able to shoot it. Actually he has sold several loads of firewood and has the cash but too tight to let go of it so i plan on getting him a couple boxes if i can find it. So will i need plugs AND muffs with the break ? Will post back on first time out shooting it. The trigger has had work - it’s safe but kind of sweet like a benchrest rifle almost !

Got hands on a couple boxes of Hornady 165 gr and moved portable bench out away from under deck to shoot rifle for first time. It’s raining cats dogs but had to shoot it. Son shot 3 times and i shot it twice. I have to say it’s less recoil than a 308 ! Very manageable so my son says dad I’m keeping it ! It’s loud very loud but with plugs annd muffs not bad. Wife said dogs both jumped up when trigger was pulled !! Its off to left about 4 clicks so when things dry out around here we will check zero again and put in safe until deer season. He paid for ammo so it’s up to me to get dies - looking to buy a set for 300 wsm. I have plenty 4350 and primers and 300 nosler bt 165 gr so should be gtg. Thanks for the input fellas
