700 Barrel removal

To each his own. Have you ever tried to bend an action? I have tried to straighten a 700 that was warped from the factory, like most are. Usually the tang is pointing down. Prior to truing it, I tried to straighten it. It was my personal action so I got really aggressive. I never got it to bend at all, and I got far worse on it than any clamp style wrench could think of.

I worry more about twisting it and not being able to get it back to reasonably straight than anything else. I think I might have seen what you are talking about, but it might be something different...the one I had that was tang down seemed more like to me when I dialed it up that it was turned off center or set up out of whack when they machined the outside dimensions. Best I could tell the bolt lug ways were pretty straight, I mean, for a factory Remington. The lug ways were within .002" front to back, but the outside of the receiver was pretty bad, like you could notice it looking at it bad. Like .020" bad. The face was out too. I ground the face perpendicular to the lug ways, lapped the bolt lugs and face and barreled it up...it actually shot pretty good for as bad as the receiver was.
One thing about this receiver, it seemed to be very hard as in Rockwell scale hard.
I have to wonder if the warp is imparted when they broach the lug ways....

That has been my experience too Tom. I don't know what that goo is, but it is nasty. Kind-of smells like junk-yard axle grease from a car exposed to the elements for a few years.

Yes sir, and for some reason I always get it all over me two seconds before wifey decides we need to go out for dinner at some Ritzy outfit. That smell can hang in there like a dead skunk in the hot summer. Whatever it is, they would seriously have to put a lot of effort into outdoing it!!!!!

Warping occurs from heat treating after machining is completed. Some are worse than others.

I have never had a problem removing any barrel. Use a good solid barrel vise, use a clamp style wrench that goes around the receiver, with a screw in the front action screw hole, smack the wrench with a rubber mallet, one time, everytime, no problems. I never understood the need for heat, breaker bars, parting the barrel, exc.
I agree. I've never seen the need for heat or cold. I have a wrap around front ring style wrench I made that uses a screw in the front hole. Clamp her in a good barrel vise and put a little tension on the action wrench and give it ONE good swat with a brass mallet and off they come.

I use a rear entry wrench with the standard t handle. Just get some tension on it and whack the RECOIL lug on the side. Have never marred a barrel or action using this method. I have the huge action wrench like the one in the video, and it basically does what i do with the brass hammer. Puts the impact on the lug.
