700 action work?

I have an older short 700 # 6713###. I honestly can't remember what it started life as, but it's been a light 7/08 for many years.

Generally speaking, is it worth the bother to have a 'smith go over this action in the hopes of ending up with a very accurate, very accurate, rifle for informal friendly competition amongst pals ?

Struggling here with the growing urge to buy a Defiance, Stiller, Pierce, etc. single shot . Not as concerned with the cost of squaring up the old 700, but more concerned with results.
Opinions solicited.

You wont go wrong with any of the manufacturers you mentioned. If your action is functioally sound you wont go too far wrong there either. Id take to my favourite gunsmith, he'll let you know if its good to go.

Truing it will gain similar results of the actions you mentioned. Fit a premium barrel chambered properly WILL give you a very, very accurate rifle, in a whole flavor of calibers.

Having been there, done that for all options you mention above I'd go with a Pierce or Defiant. I had a very good 'smith work over a Rem XP-100R action (Rem Model 7 worked into a handgun) and that was entirely satisfactory, but unless a special situation I'd never work over a Model 700 again. But then, I like a solid bottom single shot rather than a repeater for the varmint/target shooting I do.

you can get that 700 trued up for 150-200, then a barrel and good trigger, and you will be gtg. a costom action will be in the 900-1200 range, do the math, then a barrel, trigger, do the math you decision, I have went both ways, can not tell any difference, except for resale.

Ga Precision will do the action and rebarrel work for 350. Barrel cost is the same no matter what action is used. A re-barrel on an action previously done by them is 250.
So they'll do the action work for 100 bucks. How can a guy beat that?
On the OTHER hand,,,,, peddle the old 708, or a 7saum Model 7 that justs sets in the corner, maybe an older Leupold and some odds and ends,,,, and spend 250 on puting a new barrel on an action that needs no work, and! I can enjoy never having to mess with that cursed 700 bolt stop spring!

Precisely, better put than I did. George at GA will you you a fine job too. Your action, their action, aftermarket action, they ALL run the same when trued. Let us know what you decide. Happy Shooting
