700 action dimensions vs. 40X

Forgive the stupid question, please.
Is the 40X just a single shot 700 action?
Asking because I am going to build a 700 clone (Defiance) single shot and wondering about stock inlets. Would ADL vs 40x inlet be basically the same?

The 40x is the same foot print as the 700.
They are both s.s. and repeaters.

They are the same and come off the same assembly line, just stamped 40X and not 700.
A sales gimmick.

The 40x single shot stock will work with the Defiance single shot short action. If you get the optional longer tenon you will have to remove material ahead of the slot in the stock for the recoil lug.

I believe you need updated info. The custom shop is no longer using Remington barrels. I think their button rifling machines may be for sale soon. I've had a lot of 40X receivers and they sure ain't blueprinted!

In 1976 i bought a new 40 xb Rangemaster in 243 & shooting buddy got the 222 rem in a 40 xbbr. Both shot better then any off the shelf 700 i seen.

Nothing stays the same .

Yes, they moved to the Dakota facilities about 3 1/2 years ago or more.

Any info on the quality/accuracy of the current 40 xb rifles? Anyone own a new one?

The "custom shop" term only seems to mean a higher price, not always an up grade in quality these days. Brands in general.

Savage has a "custom shop", but uses standard production parts.

And now you can get a stainless steel single shot 700. Bud's and other places have them for around $400.00 PTG sells a "Blueprinted" one with a PTG bolt. for around $700.00 and from PTG you can also get it with a coned bolt.

The current Remington custom shop buys a lot of barrels from us, but the answer to the OPs question the 40x actions are not trued up.

yep, my 70-80-s era 40xb dang sure wasn't, was no better than any other standard 700. Maybe the barrels were better IDK, mine was on its third barrel. Id did have a clip slot though so I could use those fancy stripper clips to be fast on the reload.

The late model Mod7, 40X, and 700 receivers are pretty damn good. The bodies are CNC machined. Just the primary extraction problems. The new 40X with aftermarket barrels should be much better.
