700 264 Win Mag chambering issues......

I posted this in another thread as well, just wanted to throw it in here to see what the opinions were.

I've got a Rem 700 chambered in 264 Win Mag, factory rifle. The gun shoots very well, way better than what I was expecting from a factory rifle.

Anyhow, no matter what I do I get the following situation.

Full length sized brass or NS brass will go into the chamber and create a very hard bolt close, however if I lift the bolt up and pull it back slightly, then push it back the bolt will close with no issues.

If I work the action hard, like one would do in a hunting situation, the bolt will close freely and easily, but I have to slam it home with some authority.

I've tried sizing differently, I've tried just the case...no bullet, I've tried different seating depths. Lots of things.

Any ideas on this? I have an older 264 700 that has no problems with the brass I'm putting into the new one sized the same way.

Thanks

It obviously is not a case length/headspace issue, so something is catching on the way in, and when youlift the bolt, it frees itself.

You might coat the case with "machinists blue", and see where it is binding - it sounds like a problem that is a pain in the azz, but a simple fix.

How far in can you close the bolt without issues?

It will close all the way but is really tight. And not tight like a good tight chamber should feel but if feels like it grabs then "pops" shut for lack of better description. Once shut I can lift the bolt and close it like normal.

Sounds like the extractor might be catching the case when closing.

My old man said the same thing.....how does a guy remedy that?

Look at another bolt that you know is working and compare them side by side, that should point out the issue.

Alrigthy thanks!

Well guys, my old man and a few of you had the answer.

I compared it to my old 264 and sure enough the extractor was the culprit. I used a drummel and a small grinding head, removed the ejector and filed away. Very lightly for what seemed like forever.

However it worked. The shell will pop right into the bolt now and the bolt will close much better. It's still not perfect but its as far as I dared go. Unless you go about closing the bolt VERY slowly, it works pretty good.

The one thing I noticed though is the entire bolt face is machined quite poorly. Only 700 bolt of the couple dozen I own that looks this bad.

Sometimes a little piece of something can find its way behind a Remington extractor, so that it cannot back up to ride over cases' rims. This will cause the rims to be marked as the bolt is forced. Because these extractors are stamped out from thin material, they tend to be pretty uniform. It may be that what it sits in is out of spec. , not giving enough backup room. Another thing that is more difficult to remedy is the action threads being out of line with the bolt raceway. This would show up as an off center primer strike.

I encountered a similar problem with a client's 22-250, extractor for sure was the problem, I replaced with an new one and problem solved.
