7 wsm vs 7 prc

From a hunting perspective, i'm gonna pass on the 7mm PRC.
Aside from burning a little less powder, it doesn't do anything that the 7mm Rem Mag already does.
Plus i usually shoot bullets in the 150-168gr range.
So having a chamber geared towards the 180gr freebore does nothing for me.
I already have a 7mm Weatherby Magnum that i can't seat out to the lands with.
X2 here, but with a 7-08! :)

Been running a 7WSM for 12yr and no brass is not hard to find it just requires a lot of prep. IMO it is the max capacity vs bore dia that I will go for any type of competition type of shooting and that’s what I do, 180’s @ 3020. It requires a very regimented schedule to maintain consistent accuracy. IMO the 7PRC will be an amazing hunting cartridge with the new longer bullets and without that dang belted case, just not a good competition rd due to being overbore. It will be interesting if Lapua follows with brass as I would think they will.
The 7SAUM is also a great cartridge but belongs in a LA to see it’s full benefits. It’s consistent accuracy is still not without it’s issue’s as the F/class folks would have gone to it yrs ago. JM02

I've hunted with a Rem Mountain Rifle in .280 Rem all my life and love it.
I decided to build a stainless gun to reduce the abuse the mountain rifles gets. I decided to go with 7mm RSAUM. I really like it. I can load it down with 140/150 and have a powder puff that recoils less than a 7mm-08. Or I can speed it up and get better than .280 Rem performance in a short action. I'm typically using 150gr bullets. I did pick up some 162gr ELD-X to try, but I haven't loaded any of those.

I think the new 7mm PRC is a great idea, but I don't think I need that level of recoil for my damaged shoulders.

I think what you need to do is determine what you're going to use it for (matches/hunting close/hunting far). Decide which weight bullet you plan to send down range and how fast you want it to go (or how much recoil/noise you can handle) and that will tell you what cartridge you need/want.

Oh, and I'm using new Remington brand brass, they had some available this past summer and I bought a bunch of it. My 150gr ELD-X loads have been consistently 0.5 - 0.75 MOA with this cheap brass and Shooters World SW4350.

Good Luck!

I guess what I’m saying is they are both so similar why aren’t people just using the 7 wsm with a longer throat to seat the bullets out further?
IMO, brass is hard to find as has been mentioned but more importantly 7 WSM neck is short-ish. An option to address such perceived deficiency is 7-300 WSM on a long action. However with the advent of modern powders, I question whether either WSM is a better choice than .284 Win, on a long action…

This is one of the reasons why I don’t own a 7wsm or 7prc yet (I still have the tried and true 7 rem mag). My long action 284 with a 26” barrel pushes the 180 eldm ~2850.
