7 SAUM or .284 Shehane?

I think the free bore on his reamer is kinda short, but a throater can fix that.....

jumping into this conversation...i already have a 284 Shehane setup for F-Class.

I decided that Im going to build a dedicated extreme'ish long range rifle.

I might have a line on a very nicely priced Defiance Deviant Action with a Mag Bolt. I am still serious about the 7 SAUM and its cheaper to hand load at just under $1.00 per round based on 5 reloads per brass than say the 338LP at $2-3/round. But, I have a reamer for a 284 Shehane, I have dies and the extra $300+ dollars in dies/reamer for the 7 SAUM is whats changing my mind and sticking with the 284 Shehane.

The big question I guess for me...is it worth it to move to the 7 SAUM for the extra velocity for a little more cost? Do I stick with the Shehane due to the cost/benefit arguement, or scrap all of it and go with a bigger caliber and cost is not an issue when you want to bang on something say a mile away? LOL.

I would say no the difference is not worth the cost, I would consider the 300 WSM/230 hybrid combo if i were looking for something that would noticibly beat the7mm 180 hybrids in the wind at or beyond 1k

that was a round i was thinking too...or maybe the good ol' 338LP... :P

Shiraz seems to have good luck with it and I know another guy that thinks very highly of the 300 WSM as well.

If Berger ever comes out with the 195gr Hybrid or VLD with a B.C. of say .725+ it would be hard to beat in a Shehane with anything smaller than a .338 running 300gr pills... Stay with a 7 Shehane..

What about a 7mm LRM with Cauterucio 177.5`s....

Bob told me that Brian Litz has rated this bullet at .750BC at something rediculous like 2700fps.

Probably get that bullet up to 3100-3150fps. pretty easy, in the LRM.....

Bob also said that the 177.5 would be fine at those velocities.

Those running the Shehane with 180's, what kind of COAL is typical?

3.220 inches 0.010 off the lands. That reamer is setup for 180 VLDs and the Hybrids would probably work just as well 20-40 thousandths shorter.

Haha yeah you've got all the brass and we've got all the hogdon powder!

Maybe we can do a trade. We have more powder than we could ever use, but no RSAUM brass.
(people now forming it from readily available WSM brass)

Hey AusFclass, congrats on your Australian Long Range F Class championships win.

I propose we extend our pockets, shuffle across the border and spread the hogdon in a fashion not unlike the great escape! 8)

Thanks rod! It was a really good comp with some interesting conditions. I was going to shoot the vic queens but now the SA queens has been moved I can't do both. Hopefully I'll catch you in Belmont next year. :)

Hi, The shehane will perform very well at over a mile even in +20mph wind gust. I didn't have to much trouble keeping inside the 40inch black on a
f-class target at 1800yrds, although i got lost at 1900yrds the guys in the pits said the prepared 180 hyb. were still s.s. Will it keep up with the 338L
no. w/equal shooters. Thanks, John
