7 SAUM or .284 Shehane?

Phil

Which one would you have and why????

Also, if there are any 7 SAUM AI shooters out there I`m all ears about it as well.....

Phil.

I shoot a 7 Shehane. My shooting partner shoots a 7 SAUM. Both work great.

The Shehane has the advantage of using a standard 308 bolt face.

The SAUM might get you a little extra velocity. It will get more velocity. The question is if your rig will tune up where you can use it.

I have played with a LOT of 7's. and the two I always go too are .284 for bench as it seems too tune so so easy and give me the consistency to be competitive at my discipline. and the 7SAUM for hunting I can always get really good velocity and they have always shot well for me with the speed up high. I shoot the 180's for bench and the 162's and 168's for hunting.

in the real world with heavy bullets there's little difference in performance between the two, things to consider are the availability of brass, and powders (the RSAUM is better suited to the slower powders) and the action, mag VS standard boltface, any future uses (chamberings) you may want.

No Preacher you're not the only one running a 7 SAUM AI. I have one in my 1000 yd. light gun right now and I have one being built for 1000 yd. Heavy Gun competition. I didn't want to respond as my opinion is skewed based on what I have and having never competed with a .284 Shehane I felt I hade nothing to offer this conversation. My one and only complaint to date is the lack of "moderately" priced brass.

for my curiosity what advantages are you seeing with the AI version and what velocities are you running if you would??

yes
lol,
What bullet you running and what velocity?
My 7 SAUMAI usually only runs the 120 Ballistic tip's with there little asses on fire @ close to 3600 fps...
Probably would go quicker, but it's a nasty accurate little bugger right where it is...

Big Kev,

I`m all ears too....

Please feel free to enlighten us with your findings with your 7SAUM AI......

Bruce, those 120`s are screaming.............. :o

Phil.

I am shooting the 168's @ 3252fps that's my hunting load. Never put the 180's in this rig yet. have used them in plenty others though.

I believe you do have more Preach but can't blame you for stoppin'. I get just over 3600 with the 120 gr. V-Max using RL17 from my 28" 9tw tube standard 7mm RSAUM. Like yours mine are nasty accurate also. Haven't blooded it yet on Chucks but I don't think I'll have any problems with them making it back to their burrow!

The SAUM is very hard to get brass for over here. Shehane or have you looked at the 280ai? Nosler brass off the shelf or can be fireformed from several others and the 280ai is very close to the SAUM for performance

Brass can be hit and miss, I've accumulated 250 in the last couple of months. Midway currently has Norma brass in stock (100 @ $132), I bought some new Remington brass on this forum. Bruno's is taking backorders for Remington 300 RSAUM brass. For me, powder and primers have been a bigger issue.

Haha yeah you've got all the brass and we've got all the hogdon powder!

Maybe we can do a trade. We have more powder than we could ever use, but no RSAUM brass.
(people now forming it from readily available WSM brass)

Hey AusFclass, congrats on your Australian Long Range F Class championships win.

jumping into this conversation...i already have a 284 Shehane setup for F-Class.

I decided that Im going to build a dedicated extreme'ish long range rifle.

I might have a line on a very nicely priced Defiance Deviant Action with a Mag Bolt. I am still serious about the 7 SAUM and its cheaper to hand load at just under $1.00 per round based on 5 reloads per brass than say the 338LP at $2-3/round. But, I have a reamer for a 284 Shehane, I have dies and the extra $300+ dollars in dies/reamer for the 7 SAUM is whats changing my mind and sticking with the 284 Shehane.

The big question I guess for me...is it worth it to move to the 7 SAUM for the extra velocity for a little more cost? Do I stick with the Shehane due to the cost/benefit arguement, or scrap all of it and go with a bigger caliber and cost is not an issue when you want to bang on something say a mile away? LOL.

Marc has a 7 SAUM reamer, you`d have to ask him the free bore, but that would help with some of the cost...

I am in the same boat as you, i decided to build a 6.5 SAUM and pass on the 7 SAUM.

The 6.5 shoots inside the 7 to 1000 yards, it is about 200 ft. lbs. lower energy, but there has to be a give somewhere....

The 6.5 SAUM also can be mag. fed and built on a S/A vs the 7 SAUM that really needs a L/A to take advantage of the freebore necessary for the big bullets.....

I sort of want a no neck turn chamber. I know he has a 7 SAUM Match reamer, but not sure on the specs. I'll text him and ask.

Where do you get 6.5 SAUM brass? or do you have to fireform from another cartridge?
