7 SAUM Brass Prep what bushings will I need ?

What bushings will I need to neck down 300 Saum Norma brass to .284. I plan to order a 7saum type S FL die, I would like to order bushings at the same time to save on shipping. Are you guys turning your necks, mine is a no turn but will I need to turn after necking down?

How about just running Rem brass anyone have good results?

Thanks Corey

I shoot 2 standard 7mm SAUM's and 1 7mm SAUM AI and all I've ever used in them is Remington brass that has been sorted weight wise.. The Remington brass seems fine for me....

I've done it in two ways. One way is to take it down half way with a bushing die then the rest of the way with a F/L sizing die. The second way is just one step in a body die or a form and trim die. Either way, you will need to clean out the donut with an inside neck reamer of some sort. I turn my necks so I expand them after resizing to fit the turner mandrel and my inside neck reamer which is the same size as the turner mandrel. I've heard mixed reports on the Remington brass. Quality seems to vary with different lots so I have stayed away from it. FWIW, even standard sized brass for other calibers that don't need necking up or down has mostly needed to be inside neck reamed to remove donuts before it will fit on my neck turner mandrel. The K&M carbide turner mandrels have a cutter built into the end so if you got a K&M expander and neck turner body with carbide mandrel, it would clean up the donuts even if you didn't chose to actually turn the necks.

I would say if you are going remington brass try to buy a few bags form the same batch. I have processed a few new bags of 50 probably from different batches and I have seen weight variations of up to 10 grains (213 to around 224 grains from memory). I have been getting at least 6 firings from the rem brass with mild loads.

Has the Nosler 7mm Saum brass hit the market yet? I thought it was advertised as being released later this year in the sinclair catalog or somewhere? I guess you could buy a small quantity of remington to tide you over and then buy the Nosler when or if it arrives on the market.

Preacher hows the brass life on that Rem brass ?

I'm on number 9 with the AI cases in the one rifle and all is still well..

When I had my 7mm SAUM built, I got 200 pieces of Remington brass and the Redding Competition S die set. I loaded 1 dummy round to send to the gunsmith and mic'd the neck at 0.316". The guy I bought the die set from had already gotten the 0.314" bushing, so I was good to go.

The next thing I did was sort the brass by weight, using Fred Sinclair's 2% rule. I got lucky and the brass sorted into two nearly equal groupings in ranges of 213 to 217 grains, and 217 to 220 grains. I only had to cull 1 piece of brass and that was because the extractor cut wasn't deep enough to fit the shellholder.

I'm currently using 50 pieces of 1 group and have 7 loadings on them. They still look new, the primer pockets are tight, and neck tension is still good. I predict that the brass I have on hand will last until I need a new barrel.
