7 rem mag best brake???

I am putting together a 7 rem mag 24 inch heavy bbl. I have never shot this caliber and I am thinking I will need a brake on it. Any suggestions?

I have a light wieght hunting rifle in 7mm that is unbroke and is very pleasant to shoot. Now if I was going to be shooting 50 rounds at the range a week I would probably have a break installed. I guess it depends on what you use it for. I like the brakes side port just for fact you don't get all the dust while shooting prone.

Braked a 7mm Rem Mag hunting rifle with a #3 or #4 contour sporter barrel (can't remember exact contour, but it was light) using a Harrel's brake and it reduced recoil to about the kick of a heavy barreled 243, maybe even a lightweight 22-250. Worked very well for recoil reduction and accuracy was phenomenal. Of course noise levels were off the charts, so I would not recommend any brake on a 7mm RM unless all intended shooting will be done with hearing protection.

Thanks for the replys, yes all shooting will be with good hearing protection. Glad to hear the heavy bbl 243 kick can be achieved .

Just happened to be checking my 7mm Rem Mag yesterday. It is built on a Model 70 action with "cast-off" Win. Loredo barrel and BOSS brake.

Let a "special needs" student try a shot with it. He shoots a 243 his dad bought him. When he shot my 7mm his comment, compared to his 243 was..."I like it 'cause no recoil".

Holland's new Radial Quick Discharge brake is the best I have used.
All brakes are not created equal.
For field shooting you do not want a brake that has holes all the way around (kicks dirt/debris everywhere).

Do yourself a favor and look up muzzlebrakes and more and get one of their 4 port braks. You can see your hits and don't have to worry about mud and dirt being blown up in your face. 50 bucks shipped can't be beat either.

Look up the Muscle brake, I have a couple of them and highly recommend to my customers. The first one I had was on a 338 Ultra mag and it kicks less than my 308. I just finished a 338 Ultra mag for a guy in Montana, and doing load development and it is fun to shoot with hardly any recoil. They are a side discharge brake and come in a couple different sizes.

I have a Vais on mine works great. Harrels are good breaks, they're cheap, and the guys are very accomodating to you.

For hunting I shoot my 7mmRM with no brake. They aren't brutal. I hunt w/o hearing protection, one less thing to have to remember, carry, forget, drop. You'll probably shoot up 20 or 40 rounds the first couple of times you go to the range, then about three to five at the beginning of each hunting season to check your scope. Not enough to bother with a brake. If you are going to shoot doing a bunch of target shooting you're not going to get what you want from a light hunting barrel, and with a 7mmRM you're going to eat up the barrel in a short while.

Try it first, then see if you really need a brake.
