7 PRCW recoil in F-Open?

For you F Open shooters that are shooting the 7 PRCW with 180 grain bullets, how is the recoil compared to .284 Winchester with the same bullets?

Based on the velocity being approximately 100-150fps faster than the .284 Winchester, I calculate about 7-11% more felt recoil when fired out of the same rifle setup. Your shoulder will struggle to discern recoil that is +/-5%. Therefore, at 11% increase I think you’d certainly notice the difference, but it should be more than manageable.

I’m shooting a .284 at 2910 and it is very manageable compared to my girlfriend’s 6.5cm. Both rifles have the Rad 2A on them so you can barely tell the difference.

Not sure why, but I am borderline obsessed with recoil energy calculators. The one I use, on the bottom will give you relative recoil or certain cartridges at certain weights to compare to. That being said, I think recoil is subjective. I typed in the information for a light weight 300 WSM, and said no problem, I can handle that....turns out, I couldn't. Haha.

Yes, I'm aware of this. It was also a 300 WSM. I was just saying that he could get a relative number from using a recoil calculator. By typing in the information for a .284 and a 7prcw. That's all.

Then I gave an example of how I used the recoil calculator and what my experience was.

Shot plenty of both and I really don't find the PRCW to have all that much more if any recoil. I have a mildly torn rotator cuff and am usually in pain on any given day so that's a thing too. Keep in mind I'm shooting it around 2930 with 180s. It's really just a Shehane in a better case with usually similar velocities (although it can go higher of course). Keep in mind perception and acceptance of recoil is personal but there's mine.

And here you are....also giving zero input. If you've shot one or the other, you can get a comparison using the recoil calculator. Like I said in my first comment. Recoil is extremely subjective. How it feels for one person won't feel the same for you. So if you've shot one, the recoil calculator is going to be just as subjective/ accurate as someone's account of shooting both.

You're also missing a ton of variables for comparing the two. Charge weights, bullet weights, firearm weights, bags that were used to shoot off of, the weight and size of said person shooting it.

A recoil calculator will be less subjective if you've shot one and want an actual opinion.

Seriously, how would you expect someone to give you that information and have it be accurate? All they will give you is their personal accounts, which will mean absolutely zero to you, because you are not them.

When your shoulders are 80 years old you notice the difference in bullet weight/speed more. I shoot 150 in my 6.5X284 and the 180s in my 284 Match. I use my Thunder Beast on both. There is a noticeable difference with the 180s even though the 6.5X284 is running 100' faster.

As I have seen so many times over my many years, theoretical evidence is often overturned by empirical evidence. You are correct that we all perceive recoil differently. I have also never found anyone who perceives their own personal recoil tolerance differently however. I therefore theorize that a particular individuals experience between the two will have meaning.
I did not give input as I can not compare the two since I have never shot the PRCW or its variants.
As for your recoil calculator.....Great theory.

I have shot them back to back several times in F-Open. You don’t register much difference when switching from 284 to the PRCw but going the other way is very noticeable. @Dave M.’s comment in post #2 probably captures that well.

I shoot the same bullet, powder, and charge in both.
