7 PRC factory loads are too hot!

I had the same problem with early ammo lots for the 6.5PRC from Hornady. They were pushing the round hard. They aren't as hot now, after a couple years. Marketing?

I called Hornady and of course they said they use a proprietary blend, but would not tell me what it was. I told the rep that none of the published loads are above 71g, and I think 71g is with Staball HD. He told me to give him the lot #s off the box and they would look into it.

I had a 7PRC built from Brian at Pucker Factor. Defiance anTI/Proof Barrel. Went to the range this weekend with two boxes of 175s same lot number. Put 5 rds through it. Had sticky bolt on every one/ejector marks and a blown primer. Stopped shooting, got home pulled 4rds and all measured 72-72.5g on two diff scales. Also have another friend who has a Fierce Carbon Rogue with the same issue.

I bet the lot numbers match ours. Please post what they tell you.

Any updates on this? I have some of this lot#. It looks like StaBall HD to me. I have not had time to shoot it yet.

So your not going to confront hornaday on the load . But you will bitch about their load. I'm sure they have tested it many times. And so has the sammi spec group. Have you checked your chamber? less jump less pressure. So Don't say there is no problem with the gun until you do your home work.

JB, are these the marks you refer to ? I can see the "Hornady" headstamp squished out.

We noticed the same ejector marks on Peterson brass while doing a ladder test on our 7 prc , no other signs of pressure. primers are not flat,, no stiff bolt, just the ejector stamp.
if not pressure what is the real cause, bolt slap? Headspacing or brass dimensions?

I make a 6mm wildcat out of 300 RCM brass. I’m not happy with my neck lengths, so I now have 7mm PRC Brass to form with a longer neck, which means a trip back to the G S for a neck throat, +0.050, to + 0.070”, deepening job. I use 26 degree shoulder angles, per the 250 Savage, instead of Rocky Gibb’s 24 Rocket. The real problem, IMO, is the scarcity of Hornady virgin brass cases. Their redeeming virtue is really tough rims. I haven’t pulled one off in my press yet. Partly due to imperial die wax, I ‘m sure!

i had two in the shop the same way . handloads and factory pressure and one popped primer 2 grs under max . headspace was good he sent them back and we will see.

Wow that’s crazy as I’ve had seven different 7mm PRC rifles built, I’ve used ammo from 4 different cases of all three offerings and haven’t had one issue with any of it.

I had the same issue- and I have contacted Hornady. I have a return on 8 boxes of Precision Hunter going to Hornady. I’ve got a 28” solid built custom 7PRC.
