7 mm vs 7 mm?

i was wondering if there was any advantage to one or the other in these two cartridges...

i am building a 7 mm saum AI. will trough a 175 grn nosler partition around 2900 fps.

was also considering 7 mm stw. will through a 175 grn nosler partition at 2900-3000 fps.

do you think that one is more accurate than the other, or has any other advantages over one another? i also like the fact that the saum AI will use around 10 grains less powder, and be around the same velocities as the belted magnum.

just curious on what you guys may think . thanks guys, Brian

Alliant shows a max velocity of over 3100 fps from the 7mm STW with a 175 gr bullet and a 26" barrel. Worth considering... Even though it's an old-fashion belted magnum. Heck, I've seen 2930 fps from my straight 7mm Rem mag and 175 grain bullets... It was admittedly, a stout charge, but one I hunted with, successfully. :) That 175 Partition is a great hunting bullet.

Viewpoint from one who is obviously biased towards hunting... :) Take it with a grain of salt for any target shooting needs... Less powder and less recoil help a lot with good accuracy...

FWIW, Guy

what if we through in the ever trusted 7 mm remington magnum?
how does this cartridge stand up againdt these other to in the real world?

i can see that it pushes same weight bullets around the same fps, and seems to be a little less expensive due to the mre popularity. but, how does it hold up in the field, not on paper?

I do not have one but I would say you should look very hard at the 7 WSM standard chambering to keep expenses down good velocity and from what I have seen in person and read accuracy is usually outstanding. good luck with your build

can i make a go gauge out of a cartridge if i take the bullet out of the case, remove the primer and fill it with epoxy?

"how does it hold up in the field, not on paper?"

The 7mm Rem mag continues to deliver in the field, with no muss or fuss, just fine... One shot at 180 yards, completely penetrated a bull elk and dumped him dead as dead can be within a couple of seconds. He took three or four staggering steps after I shot, then collapsed. The 175 gr Nosler Partition penetrated fully, and did a fine job of putting him down.

Any number of cartridges could have produced the same results. It's more about the hunter and his marksmanship than it is about the cartridge. Bullets though, I think they're very important. A $3000 rifle sending a POS bullet downrange against a 700 pound bull elk is likely to generate POS results. On the other hand a bone-stock Remington launching a good bullet, like Nosler's Partition, will produce results like this in the field.

2800 fps/2900 fps... Who cares? A .30 cal vs a .28 cal - Who cares? 180 gr vs 175 gr? Who cares. It's all so close it just doesn't matter. Put a good bullet where they live, and critters will fall.
