7/8 X 14 Die Lock Nuts

Several questions ;

1) what do Americans call 'grub' screws, I just searched Brownells for grub screws and all I got was
'grip' screw , 'gauge' and 'grab' screw.
2) Does any body know the thread designation of the brass 'grub' screws that lock down die lock nuts ?
3) has any body bought these brass screws ?

regards
Mike.

In the Forster and Hornady die rings that squeeze closed, they use a socket head cap screw.
In the RCBS rings they use a set screw to tighten against the threads of the die.

If rcbs used 3 or 4 opposing set screw it might make them more reliable in holding a setting. That one brass set screw tends to force the die off alignment and it very easy to shear with minimal force. I've best luck with the rsbc design by inserting a small lead ball under the brittle brass set screw. The next lock rings I buy will be the clamp around die style.

Appreciate your replies Gents , we know those screws as grub screws so I guess its a cultural thing and that is exactly what happened , the bloody brass grub screw bound up on the die threads but a liberal dose of brute force and ignorance got it shifted. Cross bolt lock rings are ordered !

Mike.

You will not regret switching to the Hornady locking collars. I fought the cheap, Mickey Mouse, round set screw style clamps for years and finally wised up. All of my dies are equipped with the Hornady locking clamps now. They make adjusting and switching out dies a breeze!

If you have issues with the standard set screw put a nylon ball under it. The nylon is tough enough to lock the ring easily yet elastic enough to release when you back off on the set screw. Don't have cheap source of 1/8" nylon balls? Buy some cheap 8-32 nylon cap screws as long as you can find and cut off short pieces to use in place of nylon balls.

This is the best idea here. One of the first things I do is change out any set screw lock rings to a Forster style. Of course I use a Co-Ax so I have little choice now, but I did use the Hornady rings before.

I had very little patience using the set screw lock rings. In a perfect world you would lock everything down and done, but I notice I don't live in a perfect world.

Jammed lock ring? Loosen the set screw and give a good tap on the opposite side of the ring on a hard surface and the ring can be turned by hand.

You can hit anyplace on the lockring with a plastic mallet or screwdriver handle and loosen it off. I usually hit the set screw. I do like Sinclairs split rings!

Ive fought with the various lock rings over the years then Lee came out with their style. Witness marks on the die ring and press and I no longer have a need to "bang" on the rings. And my dies float and self center. Minor changes and adjustments are quick and easy. 0.02$

one lead shotgun pellet about #5 will help keep the screw in place and form to the threads. RCBS used to use them in their die rings. I guess the "green people" bitched that they were getting contaminated.

You beat me to the punch... That said I dunno why a Bismuth Shot/Heavy Shot would not work if they want to get fancy...
