7-65PRC (7PRCW) - Neck up from 6.5PRC

Hey All,

Long time listener, first time caller.

I've been reloading off and on for 15 years but never reloaded any wildcat rounds and I've never messed with expanding mandrels. Usually just loading a lot of 6mm variations and around a thousand rounds of 9mm every month or so.

Can anyone recommend me a mandrel body and mandrel to neck up 6.5PRC brass to 7PRCW? Start with a .282 expander mandrel?

Other than necking up, is there anything else that I need to do? I was thinking necking up then running some light loads first to form them correctly? Do I neck up, then size in a 7PRCW die immediately after? I'm lost.

Any tips and steps are much appreciated.

Sincerely,

d0nkey

Buy some ADG 7-6.5 PRCW Brass and dont look back…. Many many top shooters use ADG 7 Saum or 6.5 - 7 PRCW brass … but all you hear about is Lapua… if its on the shirt it comes out of the mouth… HA HA

Thanks, I can't for the life of me find an Lapua or ADG brass in stock, been looking for about a month and all my parts for this build are coming in. That being said, any experience with 6.5PRC necked up?

Here is what I have used necking up Lapua 6.5PRC to 7mm.
A touch of Imperial or Ballistic Die Wax to the case mouth and presto!
7PRCW cases ready for a light neck turn {even though I have a No Neck Turn chamber} it does not hurt to just skim them and do the very slight cut into the neck/shoulder junction to help prevent Doooooughnut's {:~)
You will also need the body die to hold the mandrel but that is okay as I would suggest that step after sizing anyway and you can get a range of sizes to give you just the “right” neck tension… OR you can buy some ADG 7-6.5PRCW cases ready to go…

Just searched and found this… They claim to have 73 boxes of “Bright” {50pcs in box} in stock. Not the cheapest but all the others list “Out of Stock”.
I hope they are a legitimate business…

I don’t have access to those currently. In Europe you have to buy, what’s available. I bought TNi mandrel, so it should be ok. I am waiting for my rig. Should have it built in 2 weeks.

Just lube case neck & mandrel and go slowly, should be alright in the end, just go by feel and it is not a lot of increase in size so the likely hood of collapsing a neck is very low.
Good luck with your endeavours, if you have any friends or family in the USA that is a way of obtaining those “unavailable” products.
Often products over a certain value will ship free to a USA address and then your friend or family member can on forward the item to you…
Even having to pay US shipping + international shipping it still means that you can have what you want/need.

I have a friend that necks up Lapua 6.5 PRC Brass he uses a 21st Century expander mandrel then turns the brass.. he has a .316 neck chamber.. then he shoots.. NECK UP MANDREL

Exactly as I did for my Lapua 6.5PRC brass… 21st Century Neck Up mandrel, skim turn and touch into the neck/shoulder to relieve a bit of thickness there and help stop donuts forming.
marchx said that he did not have access to the 21st Century neck-up mandrel so I suggested that he just use the 7mm “turning” one that he had and use lube on the inside of the case neck and a touch on the mandrel and go slowly.
With the neck-up that I used I only lubed the neck opening a touch and it was easy, peasy..
Forum member WILLOW has been helpful with his suggestions and even some video in regards to this cartridge.

Thanks everyone for their responses. It's been very helpful. So far I've purchased 6.5PRC Brass and Forster FL Bushing/ Micrometer Seater 7PRCW set just now and while I appreciate Micron and 21st century reccomendations, i'm trying to find a more wallet friendly expander body and mandrel. Spent this week buying all the new items for a new fclass rifle build and the wallet is overheating.

Would it be foolish to get the Cortina 6.5prc mandrel body and the .2825 mandrel vs the .2820 mandrel? Suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks again!

any thoughts if this will have any issues? pma expander die body and a 21st century expander mandrel .282

since the mandrel body is universal and not for 6.5prc i don't think there is support to ensure proper alignment when i bring the brass up to the mandrel, i figure if i'm careful bringing the ram up to the die that it shouldn't be a problem.

The Cortina 7PRCW Mandrel Die is a good buy for your final Neck sizing after the sizing.
but to neck up the brass all you need is a .284 Mandrel as the brass will return back down enough to
hold your bullet and get them fireformed if you want to shortcut and just get your brass ready for your
final load development....many ways to skin this cat. As far as the donuts just seat your bullet above them and don't worry about it...my 2c

Ps..do a search for all the old posts on the subject matter...its all been documented.

You cannot find Lapua 6.5PRC?

I ended up getting the 21st century mandrel body and a .284 mandrel.

For seating/sizing, I purchased the Forster Bushing/Micrometer-Seating set for 7PRCW. I appreciate the tips, I don't even know what a donut is (short of just reading a few lines about it, nothing definitive), so I guess i'll travel down that road once the donut possibly presents itself.

Still have to do research about load development and will peruse this forum. Do you have a go to charge worth trying as part of my testing?
