7.62x39 Reloading Advice

7.62X39 is just like any other cartridge....you must match the powder with the cartridge and bullet!
Varget is a little too slow, probably couldn't get enough of it in there with a dowel rod and a mallet.
Try H4198, N130 and similar with a 125 gr bullet.....Wonderful!

I use sierras hunting load with the 125grain soft point using benchmark powder. It is a hammer.

Now were talking! Thank you gentlemen.
For some reason I thought that I might be able to use Varget. My mistake.
I will try some of your powder and bullet advice and get back to you. I'm looking for a good coyote load for my Mini 30.
Thanks again.

Since you have a mini thirty you likely have a std .308 bore. You need to be sure of this. With the 308 bore you have a way better selection of bullets.Check with a ruger tech and be sure.

I spoke with Ruger and they informed me that the Mini 30 is bored to .310 - .311 since 1999.
I still picked up .308 bullets for it.

With that .310 -.311 bore you will shoot patterns not groups with .308 bullets. Hornady makes a .310 123 gr SP and Vmax bullet just for the 7.62X39. Sierra makes a .311 125 gr SP bullet. Accurate AA1680 powder is made just for the 7.62X39. H322 also works well.

I shoot .308 bullets out of my .310 bore. They are quite accurate. Best powder that I have found is H4198. Varget is too slow, you can't get enough in the case. Also look at the Barnes 110 gr TTSX flat base bullet. You can get a little more velocity and it's pretty accurate. Works good on deer also. The 123-125 gr bullets are good also but they don't open up as well because of the velocity.

Thanks again guys.
I picked up my bullets (Nosler Ballistic Tip Spitzers in 125g) more due to availability than choice.
We are running low on everything firearm related up here.
Any feedback on how these bullets perform?
Any good reloading tips? I'm using RCBS dies in a single press with brand new brass.

Just read your reloading manual a few times.

I run a Savage 10CFM in 7.62X39 using Lapua cases. Vhitavuori N120 is a good fit with the case capacity and 20" .308 barrel. Very good velocities and accuracy.

Started to reload this caliber and my RCBS bullet seating die pulls out the bullet every time, just before I reach the desired col.
Any ideas how to fix the die?

Anyone use the Hornady Zombie bullets that are specifically made for 7.62x39?
Thanks, JC

The zombies probably work as good as anything since so few match type grade bullets are made or should I say high end bullets.

I just picked up the Zombies to load. At least they are .310 which is perfect for my Mini.
I'll post as soon as I get some loaded and shot at the range.
