The .300 WSM recoil is tough to manage on the rest. Technique becomes critical. A 7mm is much easier to shoot well.

Agreed, but if we except recoil (and any factors resulting from it), does the 300 offer other considerations that the 7 does not? I realize that recoil is sort of a subjective thing, but I would be curious to hear if folks preferred the 300 over the 7 as long as it did not beat the #%}{^*% }#it out of them? What happens if/when the Berger 195 is released?

The 195 Hybrid, if it shoots well, could be a game changer. The short mags have the powder capacity to push them to velocities that would shoot inside 230's with less recoil. We'll see whether it lives up to the promise. [br]
230 Hybrids at around 2940 shoot well inside 7mm 180 Hybrids at the same or even a little more velocity. The problem with recoil is not whether it hurts, but how easy it is to shoot the rifle well. My .284 Shehane, shooting 180 Hybrids at 2965 in a fast barrel, is so easy to shoot that I never think about gun handling during a match. Just push it forward, hold appropriately and go. So far, that has not been possible with the .300 WSM. It requires concentration on every shot to both hold firmly and consistently. If you ask me again after shooting several matches, I may have another answer. For right now, it is significantly more trouble to shoot well. The rifle itself is very accurate and not an issue.

Steve, are both of your referenced rifles (Shehane and 300 WSM) right at 22 lbs?

I'm trying to develop a better sense of how recoil energy and recoil velocity affect gun handling ease. I'm not thinking that it is linear. I'm missing something and I'm trying to figure out what it is.

OP:
Sorry for hijacking the thread. It just got me to thinking.

Excepting recoil, why would a 7mm (of any variant) be preferable for F-Class over a 300 WSM?

For F-Open class the 7 seems to have hit the sweet spot in balancing recoil, ballistics, and barrel life. To match the ballistics of a 180 Hybrid running 2950 a 30 cal would need to push a 230gr bullet at 2800, and I don't think you could duplicate the results with a 200gr 30, you'd need 3200 FPS to get the same windage. That's a lot more oomph to get the same result. Play with the numbers in JBM for a while.

To get similar numbers from something in a 6.5 you're going to shoot up 3 or 4 barrels a yr.

The Shehane weighs 21.0 pounds and the .300 weighs 21.75. By calculation, the .300 has almost 50% more recoil energy. That is running 180's @ 2965 in the Shehane and 230's @ 2945 in .300. [br]
Barrel life remains to be seen. [br]

I have mixed opinions on the barrel life piece. I think if you trying to compete at the upper level barrel life really doesn't matter. If it takes only getting 800 rounds of of my barrel to win then so be it. Lets face it we are extremely hard on barrels in F-class. 22 shot strings in 90 degree weather!

Thanks to all the people who have provided input. I have decided to go with the 300wsm instead of the 270/7wsm.

Even if the 195 grain 7mm Berger Hybrid proves to be a winner, you are only a barrel away from shooting it. ;)
