6XC shop talk

How many people shooting the 6xc..? pro's con's. for or against the 6xc.

what is your favorite brass to use for the 6xc?

How do you get it to shoot well at long range.?.600 to 1000yrd's.

what is your favorite powder and bullet? barrel twist? type of die used? if bushing die how many thousands under your loaded round is your bushing? in other words neck tetension..002,.003,.004?

what primer do you prefer?

what seating depth do you use?

I'm shooting a 8 twist with a 105VLD,norma brass. fed 210m primer. 100yrd groups were good, 200yrd groups were not. I could hit 500 yrds fairly easy. hit a 600 and even a 900 yrd donger a few times. but I was trying to hit a paper plate at 700yrds with no luck at all.. I hit it on the edge twice out of ten rounds. mild wind conditions.
the paper plate is just over 9 inches in diameter. I need to work on my load. what can I do?

Berger 105Hybrid, jammed .020, .001 neck tension, case necks turned just enough to clean them up, Virgin Norma brass, Whidden seating die, 39 grains of H4350, Fed GM210, all the normal brass prep.

3100fps from my 1:8 twist 29inch Broughton, round count of 650ish, .3 at 100yds and 5.5 at 1000yds.

This was my load for the Wimbledon Cup this year. Load hammered but I can't read wind well enough to show it.

berger 105 hybrids pushed by 43 gr H4831sc, .01 in lands .002 nk tension, cci br match primer, going 3140 fps usually shoots in the two's @ 100 yd, all with a 1 in 8 twist bartlien L V 28"barrel norma brass
have 3 6mmXc's with various actions and barrel brands all shoot close to the same accuracy. all in 1 in 8 twist

thanks it's all been very good information, the wheels are turning now..lol..
well I said i'm just going to load it and go..to see what will happen...I do not have any H4350 or H4831sc. what I did have is ramshot Hunter powder..worked up to 44.0 gr's at 3,140 to 3,160 FPS..26" 8 twist. I do have some RL17 I have read some on it shooting well in the 6XC but I do not have a lot of it and I do burn it in my 6.5 creedmoore. it does shoot great in the 6.5 with heavy neck tension. only case prep I did was primer pockets, flash holes. checked a few necks, only had .0005 thickness varation. neck dimension is .274 loaded round measure .2705 to .271. so it seemed I would be good to go. 100yd groups showed it wanted to dot the first two shots and around .300 to .460 for 5 shots. so I thought it was time to see what it would do at long range. 4

What about neck lube. what do you do about neck lube, and or bullet lube. or seat bullet in dry clean case neck?
AND how important is it?

Just curious but what did the groups look like at 700-900 on paper? Could the conditions have just been poor and you had a great group off the edge of the plate?

drop port you are going to just have to trust my shooting experience that conditions very light switchy winds to calm. decent conditions. it just was not shooting well at all.

Thanks Hermes I seen that article before but had forgot about it.

Thanks everyone, you got my wheels turning upstairs..lol...

But hey keep it coming, it's good reading and can even learn something.

I wont get to shoot again till the weekend of the 6th. but I will be working on cases and loads in the mean time.
plus I have a new nightforce SHV 5-20 coming.

I'm right there with .308warbird.
105 hybrid jammed 20 thou. Wouldn't shoot at jammed 15 thou at all. 2 thou neck tension. 39 gr H4350. Norma brass. Necks not turned. Fed 210m primer. Bullets tipped but not trimmed. Redding bushing dies. Bartlien 1/7.8 barrel.

1 in 8 Brux 28"
39.5 gr H4350
Norma brass annealed every other firing
CCI br primer
Berger 105 VLD trimmed & Pointed, hard jammed BN coated
Lapua 105 Scenar BN coated
Wilson Hand Dies neck tension .003

Both around 1.5" vertical at 600 yards

drop port I just did not want to get into a long post. I did not shoot any groups at 900yrds. I could not hit the 700yrd plate. I shot two they were off the plate and in orbit I would say ten to fifteen inches apart. But we had a ground hog size donger at 500yrds quite small actually and it seemed I could hit it easily most of the time. but 200yard groups were approximately 2 or 2 + inches so I knew I was in trouble. I had not shot this load but twice at 100yrds. it looked good there.so me and a friend were takeing turns shooting up what I had loaded at the 900 and some at the 600 yrd donger.. we did hit that 900yrd one I think around 4 times out of maybe 20 rounds. just holding off for wind around 12" or so, now my friend hit the 600 donger two out of three shots. I think I hit it twice in a row..Ah it was fun. would have been a lot more fun if it was shooting well. but trust me the load was just no good.

I found some H4350 and some more RL17 locally so I will try a few loads at 200 to see what it might like.
then I will be back at it on my next weekend off work.

try 35 to 36 gr. of IMR4064 also if you have it with 105 berger hybrids. also try 36 to 37 gr varget with the same . Usually the 6XC is easy to find a accurate load for. I never did like re 17 though, inconsistent. h4350 and H4831sc are the best 4064 close third. Pretty sure you switch to these powders yours will shoot better. Good luck

kreiger 1-7.5 twist 28in LV norma brass necks are turned tubb dies 001.5 neck tension .271 reamer neck dia. loaded round is .269 108 bergers ( P.S. these 108s seam to be very friendly to work up) 10 thou in the lands 40.6 grains H4831sc br-2 primers for 2965fps extremely consistent has won its fair share of long range varmint matches, the coyotes are @ 850yds, I can get 20 reloads on the brass at this speed.

1:7.8 Bartlein 30" 5R, Quadlite action on a Sitman laminated stock; Norma 6XC brass & KVB-7 primers (or 6XC I've made from Lapua's superb Palma 308 brass with KVB-223REM primers) using 36.7 grains IMR 8208XBR behind either Berger's 105VLD's or the newer 105 Hybrids (both hBN-coated here at home) seated 0.020" off the lands. Good for 3,050 fps & SD's <10 & reliable out to 1,000 yards.

30" Brux 0.236/0.243 blank to use next; waiting for a reamer from Henricksen....

spclark, would you mind sharing the steps in making 6XC brass from the 308 brass?

Currently I am using Lapua 22-250 brass, sized, fire formed and "donut" reamed out.
I have pretty mush stuck with H4350 powder, Fed Match primers. I have great loads with 105 hybrids, and currently working on a load with 105 Scenar L's which is looking very promising. Pushing the scenars to 3130 fps. Most of the loads I am finding like to be jammed into the lands for the best results, currently running .0025" neck tension.
Seems to work good, although I am very limited currently to how far I can shoot. (our range only has 200 yards), so mainly just groups for me. I need to find a place to stretch out the range capabilities of my XC. Love the cartridge, its similar to shooting the PPC's, nice light recoil, easy to be accurate with it, and very easy to find accurate loads.

Thanks Guys..I made to the range today. I shot 39.0 39.5 40.0 grs H4350 here is what I got.
First I would like to say i'm shooting a sporter rifle. rem700 blueprinted, 26" stainless match #3 sporter barrel 1-8 twist. 5-20 Nightforce scope. this is my groundhog, coyote, whitetail deer & just plain old fun shooting rifle.

case prep: norma brass , annealed necks, weight sorted.unturned.primer pockets, flash holes uniformed.
naked berger 105 VLD hunting bullets, unsorted. .010 into the rifeling. all three loads shot decent but the 40.0 gr load looked the best. shot all three loads at 200 yards. had some flyers with the 39.0 and 39.5 loads worst group about 1 1/2". I think it shot well. we had bad conditions, thunder storms. to dead calm. 80 deg F very humid. I was able to get most of my loads off in a calm condition. chrony conditions were bad, I got some strange reading.so I still need to do some testing. I showed no pressure signs at 40.0 gr. I think I could go up to 40.5 no problem. I took all my stuff to load at the range in case it did not shoot at all. I resized my cases there, so no anneal and I did not have as much neck tension as I did when I loaded them after annealed..268 bushing in a reading FL die. the range was busy and I was rushing so what I loaded there may have had .3grs powder varance and that is the load I took out to 700 yards. I was able to hit all 5 shots about 1/2 moa high. not quite 1/2 moa but close.

How do you get a ES down? what can you do? what do you look for?
Also what type of neck lube do you use when loading naked bullets?

I got that groundhog this time..ha lol...

dont know what primer your using, but ive found a mag primer will give higher E S. benchrest, match primer seems to be best, but a standard lr primer has worked ok for me also. try that load with imr 4064 i mentioned you will be happy how it shoots too. that 1 group you had at 200 at .866 is pretty good for the rig you have. it may be hard to beat it. just burn more powder ,sling more lead, thats the fun of getting a new rifle. there's only 1000's of load combos out there ;D

thanks 6xcshooter. I'm using the fed 210GM primer. it's all I have..i might have a few pack's of this and that laying around. I think I would try H4831sc before 4064 if I could find it. powder is kind of hard to find and even primer's . so I shoot what I have. I did burn some RL17 I reached 3,219 FPS, slight pressure. around 3,150FPS it shot well with a 17FPS ES and about 10 FPS SD. groups were fair at 100 Yards. .003 neck tension on annealed necks. it would shoot better if I went to .004 neck tension on fresh annealed necks. but I did not feel like messing with such trickery..lol..no it looks like H4350 will shoot for me..you are right I feel for a sporter barrel and my poor eyes i need a 50 plus power scope to shoot better. there is no doubt in my mind that there is shooter operator error in all them groups. I think the 39.5 gr load had 3 shots under 1/2" at 200yrds but threw two shots horizonatally. that is a characteristic of this skinney 8 twist barrel. it seems to throw shots horizonatally when it's not in tune? duno? I think I should shoot that load more to see or just two bad bullets, primers, neck's ect.

I measured my bullet hole in the target at .233 so 1.0935 outside measurement at 200 yards would be .8605 5 shot group at 200 yards. correct? so that would be .4303 moa. correct? the top target is right side up just a little vertical making up the 1.0935 outside measurement. the next target is the same target showing 4 of the five shots at .866 outside measurement. the 700 yard target just a shade over four inches(vertical) I don't know how good that is but understand the last time I could not even hold nine inches. I think it's very good shooting. with a lot of room for improvement. but for me it's about putting them on the target as step one. I used 11 3/4 min on my scope and I was 1/2 min high. so two clicks high. so one click past 11 min would have centered the group up at 700 yards. I'm very happy. But I'm still looking for information on neck lube and how important is it in shooting long range?. I seen a article some where about neck lube causing high ES. I want to know because im a little inconsistent on neck grip. how do you keep neck grip consistent?.

a pic of the most accurate sporter rifle. ah just kidding. It sure seems to be a great cartridge.
A 7 twist barrel is on order,a great custom action,on order. #4 sporter. but being switch barrel either rifle I wanted to go up to a heaver barrel. not sure what size would keep me under a bench rifle.
this rifle weigh's right at 10.0 LBS.

I tried H4350 and H4831SC with Sierra 107's - about 100 round of each to work up loads. The 4831CS wouldn't shoot very well out of my 30" Barnard. Not terrible, but not nearly as good as the H4350. The H4350 gets nice groups right at 39-39.3 grains, and could probably go faster - I saw only very slightly (almost not noticeable) flattening primers at 39.3. Velocity is around 3075 at 39.0. Very nice cartridge, although it gives up a little wind to the bigger stuff out there. This is with Norma brass, which is pretty good. Still going strong after 7 firings. I don't bother annealing, and the rifle holds 2-3" of elevation at 600 without any trouble.

I am using bartlein for the moment with 5r twist 8 and 32 inch long. I have used border, bartlein and this barrels with normas spec before...

Norma brass (cheap here in sweden) and .269 neck with .002 clearence and .001
neck tension.
Powder that i have for favorite is Norma URP, with 105 hybrid .004 from the land can i reach vo over 3300 f/sek without a sticky bolt but i go for a safe load in 3170 f/sek to save barrel life.

Norma URP powder has been shown to have the smalest pressure variation if its cold or hot outside.
Primers, cci 200 or what gives me the best es today have i between 3-6 m/sek es with cci 200.

This last bartlein barrel in 5r is a hummer...it hold the elev so good al the way out to 1000 yard, and i have shoot severel 5 shoots group at 325 yard between 15-20 mm.
Wilson bullet seater and redding die is what i use, plans to bye a hydro bullet seater.
