What kind of trouble would a deep 6xc/6slr cause me

What i am wondering is if a fellow could get away with making a bastard 6slr by running a 6xc about .120 deep?
I can make a base sizer die for way cheaper than i can buy the 6slr dies ect.
If a fellow was to do this how acceptable might the results turn out?
Not expecting it to be completely hiccup free just work aroundable? If that makes any sense.

Howdy !

To quote the main character from the movie Jeremiah Johnson - "....Eh...What trouble ? "

I say go for it ! You'll be about .026" short of full .243Win case oal, right ?

The main challenge as I see it is the skewer that base diameter @ a practical point.
IF you are going to be operating from virgin brass as the starting point, by all means
FIRST get the brass in-hand; and see exactly what base diam you will be actually using.

Apples and oranges -
When I had my DEEP 6 wildcat chamber cut, it was made by running a 6mm Remington reamer in
" short "; for a nominal .466" base diam. I use(d) 7 X 64 Brenneke as the parent brass, as it has the required
.466" base diam, and is .308 bolt face compatible.

When I received my new Norma 7 X 64 cases, they came in @ exactly .466" base diam.
Now, when I received new .260 Rem cases and .358Win cases..... they all came in w/ .466" base diam; too !
These latter 2 cases are usually spec'd as having a .470" base diam.

See my point ?! You might not need a small base die. Please check your brass, first.

Your wildcat idea sounds similar to my DEEP 6, as an adjustment to reamer run-in depth is being made.
DEEP 6 has the same long VLD-friendly neck that 6mm Remington has. Because of that long .333"neck,
DEEP 6 case oal is just a tad longer than .243Win. That has not proven to be any problem for me, as loaded rounds
still fit through the loading port of my Wichita WBR1375 readily.

Your wildcat idea should be a similar deal, as cartridge oal and its compatibility w/ your rifle ( magazine ) would be the key question.

Die wise, I 'spect you would simply co-op off whatever dies one would normally use for an SLR; for things like neck sizing and bullet seating. For DEEP 6, I was able to use 6mm Remington shoulder bump/bushing NS, and also for bullet seating.

You'd have to tell me about your form die idea(s). For DEEP 6 case forming, I was able to use a stock (LEE)
6.5 X 55 FL die w/ its internals removed... as my case forming die. It has just enough clearance for my wildcat's .466" base diam and .431" shoulder diam that I can case form w/o sizing the case bases; and also not mushroom the shoulders during the shove downward.

FWIW -
DEEP 6 case capacity is 51.2gr H2O.

Please keep us posted on your progress !

Shawn,

One thing to consider would be the base diameter of the finished chamber compared to the brass you plan on running. Just the 1st thing that comes to mind. :D:D Keep us posted.;)

What brass do you plan on using? Is this because you don't have a slr reamer?
Correct. I was wanting another hot rod 243. But im tired of trimming! I have a good 6xc reamer and the dies. The top end of the 6xc is well designed. So my idea was to chamber a 6xc just deep enough to use 243 brass. Which essentially is a 6slr. Except for me much cheaper, if it will work. If this idea has a decent shot at working I may chamber a rem takeoff barrel and give it a try.

I’ve got a 6slr reamer if you want to borrow one. Only used to chamber 1 barrel so far. Throated for 107smk’s from pt&g

Considering the overall cost of the shooting sports why go cheap now ?????
Well if my plan wont cause me any trouble, Id like to spend the money somewhere else. Ive met folks proud of how much theyve spent on a rig.
Im so tight I would squeak when I walk, but only if squeaking is free!
