OH, I tried to flatten the base of a bullet the way you described, Hoot, and since I don't have a lathe I learned a way not to do it. I put it in pliers and tried to grind it off. The grinder, as you probably guessed, tossed that sucker across the barn. I would have liked to know the velocity of it.

Chuck it in a variable speed hand drill and gently kiss the grinding wheel with it rotating at low speed, say 60 rpm. Try to keep it squared up as best you can. Don't "horse it". A little dab will do ya'

That seems much safer than what I tried.

This goes without saying but once you've got it squared, de-burr it on a piece of 220 Wet-or-Dry, or use whatever you have at your disposal.

I shot groups at 300 and 600 with the previous loads and started with the COAL at the lands and shortened by 0.005 for each test back to 0.030 off the lands:
107 SMK with RL 16 at 39.2gn and 210M primers at the lands shot very well at 300 and 600 as did the load at 0.020” off. The groups were all between 1 and 4 inches at 600 and 0.7 to 2” at 300.
115 DTAC with RL 16 at 39.8gn and 210M primers, The load which shot very well was 0.020 off the lands and was 2” at 600 and 0.8” at 300yds.
This was only one group at each distance but I think I will go with these loads and see if they are repeatable. If they are I may test different primers and be done messing with them.

I attempted the Wheeler method by my bolt does not fall in place as does the one Wheeler uses in his video. It requires a small amount of pressure to close so I am assuming it makes the test less accurate.
full-length resize your brass try the brass first make sure it drops before you try placing the bullet and setting it

My last test was to see if the primers made a difference. The 115 DTAC with RL 16 at 39.8gn and 205M primers did a little better than the BR-4 and CCI 450 primers. All three had single digit SD. The ES was from 8 to 18. The 107SMK with RL 16 @ 39.2 was the same for all three with regards to average velocity and also had a low SD and ES. Best groups of the day were from the 115 DTAC and the federal primer with 1/2" at 300 and 1" at 600yds. I will stick with the federal but if I run out will not hesitate to use the others.
