6XC reamer WAAY above pay grade.

I just did 3 days of reamer research to be honest still only have a clue. I was researching free bore I would like to use bullet in 105+ class have eye on Berger 105 Hybrids. Of the reamers available NOW for rental or immediate purchase I have come across 3 with the following FB a 0.060", 0.090" and a 0.123". If my so called research is correct the 0.090" would be a good choice this reamer also has a 0.275" neck that would give me 0.005" using Norma cases which loaded measure 0.270". Per previous post I'm building a tactical rifle and want rifle capable of .5 MOA to 600, 1 from 6 to 1000. I do not think that is to ambitious I have a few Tac's that will do that now but I'm a fiddler and have to fiddle. Thank you

Check out this thread and then contact David Tubb who just posted there. Might as well go to the source :-)

Call dave Kiff at Pacific Tool & Gauge, tell him the bullet you want to use, and how you want to seat it. Jammed, touching, or with "jump" at .010", .020", etc. He has an optical comparator, will enter your bullet of choice & have the exact FB required. No guessing or games of math. Also a great place to buy your own reamer. Why pay the big bucks for a premium barrel & all the installation costs, then have a reamer of unknown quality used for the all important chambering?

+1 never compromise on a reamer. I'd rather have an above average barrel and an outstanding custom reamer than a perfect barrel and a rental reamer. You'll never know its history unless you discover it the hard way: ever witnessed a cannelured chamber because of irregular cutting and chatter? or had a reamer break on you whereas you did everything right?
This kind of tricks will drive you so mad it might really lower your life expectancy.

Got you, the 0.090" I'm looking at is a new PT&G reamer, understand rental not great option. I will call Kiff with bullet etc. I'm not hooked on one bullet so will give him a few choices and see if he will give me happy medium. Like stated prior tactical rifle and I want to try various bullets.

I have a 6xc and am very happy with it. You already have all the advice you need. The two that have achieved the pay grade are David Tubb and Kiff at PT&G. Follow their advice and you have the best.

My 6XC reamer is .104FB and .274nk?(or maybe .275 like the first one?). This is what Dave K recommended for my using 107SMK and also what brother uses for 105 Bergers. He had told me this was is 'standard' dimension' reamer. Shoots great in our setups. I run a 2.6" OAL with the Sierra and .020 off and brother IIRC runs about 2.620" with the Bergers and I think he is jamming them a bit. Haven't really tried it on the Amax but did a build for a cousin this summer who plans on using them. What few test rounds I run down it shot really well with IIRC .020 jump.

Thanks all, the Dave Kiff advice was the ticket. I WAS heading down the wrong path and Dave got me squared away in no time, a great guy. Good news he had what I needed on the shelf and it's on the way so I won't miss my smith squeeze in Dec 1 that cost me a case of beer and two fifths of Johnny Walker black.

Mark: With having your own reamer, you now have the ability to get a custom FL sizing die made, and if it turns out to be a good chambering, you can have another identical chamber cut. Yet another advantage will be the ability to use the same brass for more than one chamber. Be sure to request a copy of that reamers print drawing & keep it with your records. Another advantage ( I keep re-remembering) is that you know the chamber over all length, so have proof positive of case trimming requirements. No need to do a chamber cast or use the Sinclair chamber gauge. I keep trying to think of a dis-advantage to having your own reamer, but keep coming up blank.

.104 freebore on mine, with .272 neck which works great with my Norma brass neck turned just enough to clean it up all the way around.

I wouldn't make that delivery until AFTER he does your work.

I too am working on a 6xc build for tactical competitions. Also have my eye on the 105 Hybrid. What reamer specs did you go with.

Thanks

Received new reamer from Kiff now on route to smith. 10 day turn according to date marking.
0.274" neck which will give me 0.004" with Norma brass loaded= 0.270", 0.90" FB, 1 1/2 lead.

Maiden run was yesterday load with 39 grains rl 17, 115 naked DTAC's. Average velocity 3024 fps 10 rounds, sd 7 was best load. I won't even say how well it shot some one may call BS. Only will say most accurate rifle I have ever owned and I have owned some good ones. Also tried Berger 105 hybrids with rl17 and h4350 they did not do near as well as the 17 and DTAC but this was first time out. Primed the fired brass this pm and primer pockets as tight as new, I'm a believer! ;D

Mark, it is sure great to read that you're off to a good start with it. Glad it all worked out for ya and continued good luck with it. :)

OBTW, you wouldn't surprise me a bit on the group size with that load. :) WD

Thanks for kind words and help along the way Wayne it is very much appreciated. I'm torn between stopping load development right now and just shoot or try and develop a bit more. I have 115 Berger vld's and Sierra 107's and half box of 105 Hybrids but may not even open the boxes. I built as a tactical rifle on a Sako TRG action, chassis and normally shoot in the dirt off a bipod and rear bag I'm not sure anything more to be gained for my discipline. But I DO have this sneaking feeling the pull to piddle will get the best of me! ;)
