6xc or 6x47L

I looking to do another build and I'm trying to decide on which one to build. I will be using it for different types of shooting. I want to build something that will reliably feed from the mag. I will be shooting local matches out to 400 yards, some 500 yard F class and may possibly try some tactical matches. I know that I would be served better by dedicated rifles but right now I just don't have the money. So out of the 6xc and 6x47 is one better than the other or is it just a matter of picking between the two? Does the SR primer in the 6x47 give any problems with the slower powders? I know how good the Lapua brass is, what about the XC brass?

Thanks,
David

I'd say more HP shooters use the XC than the Lapua because Tubb introduced it and won the Nationals with it several times years before the 6x47 came on the scene. I've built several 6x47s & 6XCs for myself and others, and have seen very little difference between the two. My personal preference is the Lapua, but again, the XC got a headstart on the Lapua, and that can't be ignored when quoting facts about how many HP shooters use it.

Get the 6X47 Lapua, better brass, and I have been beat by them at 600 yd. F-Class, they really shoot!

Actually, I would check out the Gary Elieso tube guns in 6BR or a BR Improved.

They feed very well from his magazines and you cannot beat the BR Cartridge out to 600 yds. Way too accurate and economical to operate too. Great Lapua brass and bbl life that can't be beat by either the XC or 6x47.

Good triggers and a multitude of forend mods for bags, sling, or bi-pod.

That is where I would go for a multi-purpose rifle.

David,

remember Lapua has announced it is producing .22-250 Rem brass to be introduced sometime soon, so the brass quality and strength issue between the two will no longer apply.

There is one basic difference between these two similarly performing catridges that might affect your choice depending on what you're basing the new build on - primer size. 6.5X47L / 6X47 have small primers, .22-250 / 6XC large. With most factory actions you get primer cratering and piercing at below-max pressures with the small primer unless you get the firing pin turned down and bolt bushed.

If you're using a custom action, toss a coin to decide. If you're planning on a Remington 700 or similar, I'd go for the 6XC.

Thanks for the replies guys. I talked with my gunsmith and he pretty high on the 6x47L. He has had experience with both and said that I wouldn't go wrong with either. With primers still being a little hard to find and since I already have about 10,000 SRM primers I guess I will go with 6x47.

Keep in mind that Tubb tested both small/large primers for the 6xc. He determined that small primers were inconsistant in lighting over ~35gr of powder.
So he went large.

I believe David Tubb, and see no use for the x47 from Lapua or Creedmore.

Well, my load for my 6.5x47 Lapua consists of 42 grains of powder (7 more grains than a small primer "can" ignite consistenly), and it shoots better than many I have seen, and it has a small primer pocket!

You made the right decision, go with the Lapua!

I've been shooting my 1st 6x47L for several years, and while I have noticed some higher ES numbers over the chrono in really cold tempertures with R7-1/2s, CCI 450s seem to take care of that issue. I typically use N160 or some old Data 86 (no longer available) in the Lapua. Accuracy has never been an issue in any of the three 6x47s I've built for myself, but then again, it's also been just fine in both of my 6XCs. I very much doubt you'll have any regrets with either cartridge.

Also, Gary Eliseo makes longer magazines for the R5 repeater that are designed to handle 6 or 6.5x47, 6XC, & 6.5 Creedmoor. His new RTS uses AICS short mags designed for the 308, which also work perfectly with the above ctgs.
