6xc Naked 107 Match Kings Re 17

I have tried searching through the site and looking in archives but cant find the answers Im looking for. I am sure someone else is using this combo.

Trying to work up a load on for my new rifle that was delivered last week.
Norma Brass
CCI BR2
RE 17
107 SMK
Seated at 2.710
(I made a case gage out of an old 22-250 with the 107 SMK, my lands of my rifle pushes the bullet back to 2.720)
85 degrees

I started at 37 grains and went up to 38.5, without seeing any pressure signs with the highest velocity being 2920 at 38.5 with the rifle shooting decently at 100 yards.
I have experience using this powder in my 284 and know that it has a very soft pressure curve.
The groups were about the same for each load, well under 1/2 MOA.
With uncoated bullets where did you start seeing pressure signs? I have seen none of them yet.

I know with my 284 the harder I pushed it the tighter the groups got. Is this the case with this powder and the 107 SMK?

Thanks,

Will

I don't have a 6XC but QuickLOAD shows that as a pretty light load. David Tubb's site has some load suggestions.

My 6BR shoots a 102% load of 34.0 RL17 and Sierra 107 molys at just over 3000 from a 30" barrel. Pressure indications are normal. My experience is the same as yours; RL17 seems to perform best near max pressure.

Will, my testing was with moly 107's so cut one grain from what you I did and you should be close. Like any powder there are lot to lot variations, so this should be a guide not an absolute.

German,
I have read that article a few times but didnt know exctaly where to start with the non-moly bullets.
Thanks for the help. This is my first rodeo with a this cartridge and a cusom rifle so I want to be able to get it just right.

Thanks.

Will, if you're just starting with the 6XC, I would really recommend H4350. Once you have a good idea of how it performs with the "standard" powder, then venture out to RL17. I shot the 2 lb. of it that I got for testing and never shot it again because I was concerned about bullet failure at the MV that it can generate. Even at 1000 yards, the ballistics of a 105 Berger (my usual) or a 107 Sierra at 3000 fps which is attainable safely with H4350, are all I need. The extra 200+ fps available with RL17 was, in my opinion, courting disaster. A couple of 9's won't end a match, but a blown up bullet makes the rest of the weekend an expensive practice session.

Thanks for the advice, I will have to pick some of that up. I have a 5 pounds of RL17 on the shelf so I figured I would try what I had. My main concern was trying to hit the 3000 mark with the 26" barrel and tuning the load from there to get the accuracy I want. So far it shoots better than my ability and should only get better.

Worked up from where I left out last time with the RE17 still have not had the time to look for the 4350.
38.5-2925 Avg
39- 2975 Avg
39.5-3019 Avg
40-3054 avg
Took it up to 40 grains of RE17 Tonight, 90 degrees I had 3054 Average.
I still have not developed any pressure signs. How far off the lands does the XC prefer bullets to be? I have them .01 now. Will tweaking this make that much of a difference if so, what is a good increment to tweak? I have a Redding Competition Seating die with the micrometer.
