6XC load data for 80 GN sierra Varminters

The only bullet Ive ever shot from my 6XC is the 107 Sierra. I'm taking it on a prarie dog hunt, and picked up some 80 GN Varminters. I have not successfully found any load data for this 80 Gn or much in the 80-90 range. All the data posted seems to focus on the 100+ gn bullets. Any one have advice on what to use? H4350, RL-15, 8208, benchmark, H380? Thanks.

Side note, Ive got a thread going over in the Varmint hunting section, and keep getting an error every time I try to comment on the post. For everyone that answered my questions there, thanks I'm not ignoring you. Any one know why I can't respond to the thread?

I feel for you. I am switching from 6mm Remington to 6xc and I have the same problem looking for loads with an 87gr bullet with Varget. People mean well, and they say to check Tubb's site etc., but everything is for the heavy long range bullets. Someone posted some Quick shot loads with the 87 gr. bullet, maybe he will do the same for you. Good luck.

The sierra manual for 6 International, varies significantly from the Hodgdons website data for the 6-250. Sierra says 31.5-37.1 gns of H380 for the 80gn bullet, but Hodgdons says 37.0-40.0, essentially zero over lap in data. No matter where I start I'd be significantly out of the window of the other data. I'm thinking maybe start at 36.0 gns, not too far at the extreme of either data set. With the larger capacity of the 6XC vs the 6-250 I don't want to jump too far down into the low 30's, if the hodgdons data turns out to be more appropriate.

For a varmint rifle, look at the heat index on powders, which will have a great impact on your barrel life in colony varmints. AA2700 would be excellent for a cooler burning powder. We used 2700 Screaming 70g TNT and Noslers out of the 6/250 AI and 243 AI, barrel life was very good. AA2700 has the burning rate in the range of the 4350's.

I had two long barrel 6/250's with 12T and zero freebore. I shot H335, with 60 and 65g which is very close to the xc.

Over time, I think that we will see more hunters having slower twist custom barrels with shorter throats in the 6x47 and 6 XC, or just shorter throats.

Any idea where I can find this list. I’m not finding it on google, but I’m not sure I’m searching the right term.

with H4350, start with 38 grains and work up from there. will have plenty of room to go up if you want more speed.

AA2520 would be a great place to start with 80g, then AA2700....cool powders.

HV100 should be at the top of the list also.

Thanks. At the moment I don’t have any Western powders Sutton around. It’s good info though, I’ll definitely save it for later.

For anyone curious, I shot RL-15 with the 80 Sierra varminter and got pressure signs at 38.0, so the book info posted above is dead nuts on.

I actually settled on an H380 load of 39.2 grains with the same Sierra #1515. I shot as low as 38.1. 39.2 isn’t max, but I didn’t continue above 39.2 because it grouped acceptably and the range was closing.

Speed over chrono at 39.2 of H380 and the 80 SVT averaged 3388 from the 28” barrel.

I got the H380 loads based on 6mm walker and 6mm international data I was able to dig up.

For heat index you can look at this barrel life calculator and when you select a powder it will show you the heat index.
https://pierrevanderwalt.com/barrel-life-calculator/

The lower the index the longer barrel life will be. AA-2700 has a heat index of 3545.
Hybrid100V also has a low heat index of 3545.

H-380 has a heat load index of 3970 and according to Quickload ( I adjusted QL burn rate factor to your chronograph verified velocity and guessed outside temp around 85 f ;)) Near Maximum load of H-380 ( at 59,000 psi) is around 40.7 gr, and velocity from your 28" bbl estimated at 3,500 fps.
I you're happy with the accuracy of your 39.2 gr load, I would stick with it because as pressure raises, barrel life shortens.
