6XC & light bullets

Hoser

Gold $$ Contributor
I am looking to shoot some prarie dogs and rockchucks with my Tubb this summer. Anyone have any data with 60-70 gn bullets? I have lots of different flavors of powders to choose from. Thanks in advance.

hoser,
I can't believe that there is no one out there that has worked up some light bullet loads for the 6xc. But I think I'll start on that project in the next day or so. I'm shooting 105 A-max bullets out of mine but the idea of driving the bullets out of the XC over 3000fps has me curious as to the results. I'll keep you informed.

Randy&Hoser,
I took your advice and went to the 6-250 chart. I chose Varget powder and started with 35.0 gr. and moved up in 1/2gr. steps. 35.0 and 35.5 were nothing to brag about, posting 5 shot groups in the .6 to .7 range for 5 round@100yds. Velocities were 3304fps for the 35.0 load & 3225fps for 35.5 . 36.0 proved to be a shooter in my rifle putting 4 shots into .120 and a fifth making the group open up to .440. Velocities for 5 shots of 36.0 of Varget averaged 3364fps for 5 rounds with an extreme spread of 24. I tried 36.5 but pressure signs were evident, with diminished accuracy. In my opinion, it's hardly worth the 375 fps. gain over the 105 gr. Lapua and A-max bullets I shoot now @3000. Possibly other powders would yield better results with the lighter bullets. Anyone have any suggestions?
Hope this helps,

Just shoot the 105gr A Max as they will be better for the long shots having less wind drift and because they are plastic tiped the expand verry well. I have just developed a load for a hunter using the 6x45,6mm 223) and the A Max for hunting and the Sierra 107 for target shooting as they group a bit better in this rifle.

Bill,

Just curious, what kind of velocities did you get with those heavy bullets in the 6x45? It's a pretty small case compared to 6XC.

Thanks,

Lefty

Bill,
I agree with you totally. I just couldn't resist the temptation to see what the light bullets would do. I'm running both the 105 Amax and Lapuas at 3000fps with great accuracy and no pressure signs.
