6XC from .243 Win?

I realize that the 6XC was originally formed from .22-250 brass and now Tubb and Norma brass are available.

But I have a box car load of .243 Win brass and am wondering if it is feasible to form the 6XC from this brass. It would require form and trim dies and probably turning the necks. Has anyone tried it? Happy with the results?

Don't bother, just do the 6mm Super LR and use all that 243 Win brass - see link below:

You can use 6XC dies for the 6mm Super LR too.

rcw3, great stuff! I like the fact that Redding has die sets available for the 6mm Super LR. Also don`t have to turn the necks. My barrelsmith won`t buy a reamer for a one off, can`t blame him, he is not running a charity. Up here in the Canadian boonies he would probably never use it again. So we buy our own reamers from Pacific Tool.

I totally agree with the statement that Win brass is just as good as the expensive European stuff. I beat a lot of Lapua and Norma brass in F(O) at the 2009 Ontario Fullbore Champs with Win brass in my 6AI. Reading the wind is more important than "perfect" brass.

I am putting ideas together for next Winter in anticipation of the demise of the 6AI. She will have 1200 rounds on her by the end of this coming Summer. The 6AI horsepower is great at 900 and 1000 but I am not happy with the 300 scores. So am looking for something a little smaller. The 6MM Super LR could be just the ticket.

Don't rule out the 6mm CM.....243 brass no turn neck also, same 20 degree
shoulder just the neck is closer to a standard .243 Win in length, no die needed to form.

Yes, before you make your decision look at the 6CM. I have a new spare die that I would part with at a fair price. It's a custom die Redding makes them. Do a search on "joesr" threads on here and read plenty of good info.

Great stuff, guys. For the last 24 hours I have been pouring over cartridge dimensions and reamer drawings. All your advise really helps. I have been reloading for 50 years but am always coming across something new.

From what I can see the 6 CM and 6 Super LR are very similar. They both have a 30 degree shoulder with no change in overall length compared to the parent .243 Win case and the same diameter at the base of the shoulder. In other words, neither is "blown out".

The 6CM has the same neck length as the parent .243 and moves the base of the shoulder forward to obtain the 30 degrees.

The 6 Super LR has a longer neck than the parent .243 by moving the top of the shoulder back to obtain the 30 degrees.

So both cases would place minimum stress on the parent case while fireforming. The 6CM would have more internal volume than the 6 SLR and hence more velocity.

Hope my analysis is correct. Always receptive to comments.

I am using a 6CM and am very happy with it.

I use Lapua brass, H1000 and 115 DTAC bullets.

Over 2,000 rounds through this barrel and minimal throat erosion. By now my 6XC barrels would be trash.
