6XC barrel length advice

Hey guys,

Considering a light weight 6XC build for days when I want a light load. So far I have a High-tech stock, Rem SA, fluted Brux #5 6mm 8 twist, older tuned Rem trigger. Considering 18" or 20". Will most likely will be running a suppressor and 87 Max or the 105. Berger VLD Hunting. 18 would be very portable. Just do not want to loose to much speed. This would be for hunting coyotes. Any and all advice greatly appreciated.:D:cool:

Thanks, Paul

18 or 20... not a big difference. Mines 28 inches, but i didnt plan to use it like you are. Pick what you like better and run with it!

If a suppressor is on it all the time go 18 to keep it a tad shorter... if your debating short anyways we aint worried about velocity here

No comment on 6xc with your barrel length. Guessing the lighter 87 might keep you in the velocity you need

Comment on barrel length and hunting. I made the decision this year to just run my 24 inch 300wsm supressed for moose. So 31 inch barrel. Hunted swamps, heavy timber. Ran it on a kifaru pack with gun bearer. No real issues running the longer tube. It was that rifle or my 20 inch 375 ruger. The extra length for velocity was just not that big of a deal. Funny is I shot my moose at 15 feet. Lol.

Just saying I'm slowly getting over the long and supressed tube. Slowly. Lol.

I have a 6xc #5 contour in 10 twist. Rem 700 SA and Jewel trigger. Mine supports a 26" barrel. Am VERY happy with it as a walking varminter and calling rifle shooting 75gr Vmax, 70gr NBT, and it REALLY prints the 85gr Sierra HPBT well.

Personally, I wouldn't go shorter than 24" just for no other reason other than not to have to give up any more speed. As the speed is what helps make the bullets do their job. (Of course accuracy helps as well, but your question was about speed) ;) JME WD

Good Morning Paul,

With a shorter barrel and a suppressor, there are two other things to consider:

One is the reamer used to cut the chamber because those two bullets will seat completely different from one another. The choice of powder will be very different for each also.

Two is the consideration of powder choice since any fouling in the form of unburned powder and coatings will necessitate cleaning the suppressor.

I'm running a 19" 6XC using the Nosler 95 gr. Partition over a nearly full case of Accurate 4064 but without a suppressor. It's a very comfortable rifle to carry and shoot with little fouling. The coyotes are usually in two pieces after a hit from this set up...

Regards.

Kurz ,

Do you happen to have any chrono readings to give me some idea of speed ?

Thanks, Paul

Accurate 4064 should be right around 3,000 fps. You can jockey this around some by switching to a more active or hotter burning powder like Re-17 (not a full case) or Norma URP (a full case) to get another 100 fps or so. This is not an ultra long range set up but works great. If the coyotes are really weary and skittish, I switch to the 6mm Crusader or the .240 Weatherby.

Regards.

Paul,
I built myself a coyote calling rifle last year on a SA M700 in a Manners T3 stock w/PTG Stealth DBM. Used a 1-8tw Krieger #6 sporter finished at 23" & threaded for use with either TBAC 30CB9 or Ultra 7 cans. I was getting 2987fps out of H87BTHPs using H100V, and just over 2900fps out of Hornady 105 BTHP & AMax, using IMR4350. With a Bushnell 4.5-18x44 in TPS TSR rings on an EGW 20 MOA sloped rail, it weighed in at 11lbs - not too heavy to carry, yet enough weight to be pretty stable from various positions.

I'm at 3150ish (measured with a cheap chrony, hence the "ish") with 87 grain vmaxes out of an 18 inch 6 Creedmoor. Not at max yet with H4350, but getting close. I'm not certain of the exact difference in case capacity between it and the XC.

A little off the path but the XC case is approximately 49 gr. while the Creedmoor is 53.0 approximately.
