6XC at 706 yards

I took a friend who had never shot long range or a scoped rifle with me last evening to shoot my steel. We drove to a recently planted soybean field and set out the steel, which is 8" across the face. Then we drove to the other side of the field (actually alternating strips of corn and beans) and set up my portable shooting bench. My friend had this very dubious look on his face when he saw how far away the steel was sitting. I ranged the steel with my 10x Bushnell Fusion rangefinding binoculars at 706 yards. I dialed in 13.125 MOA elevation and .5 MOA right (very slight breeze) and squeezed off a shot. I was extremely pleased to see the bullet smack just high and right of the center. I then handed the gun over to my friend. His first shot missed left, so I dialed in more right correction. His next shot missed right, so I took out half the correction. His next shot hit the steel and he was ecstatic. I then returned the scope to my original settings and took one more shot, hitting the steel between my first shot and my friend's hit.
My friend told me that I had made his day. And that of course made my day.

Nice shooting!

What kind of load did you use...bullet/powder?

I've just got my barreled action back from gunsmith in 6xc and anxiously waiting for a Manners stock.

Thanks, bnc. RL-17 lit with 215Ms and pushing 105 hBN coated bullets. 28" 8 twist Criterion barrel on a Savage 12BVSS action and stock.

The nice thing, a good build will do it all day every day to the point it gets boring. Cut the target size down to 1/2 MOA.

I would tend to agree - if it was dead calm all the time. I'm still learning how to read the wind & correct for it out past about 600 yards or so.

Understood, a very difficult skill too master. I should have said 1" MOA, half a very tough row to hoe for anyone.

Thanks, Mark. Actually my 8" steel plate is 1.14 MOA at 700 yards. And my two shots would have hit a 1/2 MOA plate. However, I sometimes wish my steel was bigger so I could see how much I need to correct for "near" misses. But since I live in a motorhome and must carry my steel around with me, I'll keep what I've got. :D
