6XC and VV N160

Anyone ever load 6XC using N160? I am now searching for load data for the cartridge and am wanting to find a good compressed load. No one but berger show case fill ratio.

gunmutt,

VVN-160 and 165 are both a little too slow (albeit nice and cool burning) in my opinion to generate enough plasma to work efficiently and create enough velocity to be viable. I have used many pounds of both but in slightly larger cases with the heavier bullets.

Hodgdon Hybrid 100V makes a nice compressed, accurate load in my 6XC loaded with 105 grain Match VLD bullets. But your rifle, barrel and chamber will determine what is acceptable. As always, start lower and work up slowly watching for signs of pressure.

Regards.

I don't like compressed loads so I use a drop tube funnel to load.
43.5gr is just at the bottom of the neck. I would start at 42.0 and work up.
I loaded all the way to 45.0grs just using a drop tube and a slow trickle into the case
using the drop tube allows you to get more powder in the case and just below the neck keeps you from compressing the powder which is kind of bad for accuracy .
43.5grs 115 VLD 3,100 FPS 26" barrel. I prefer the CCI BR2 primer with that load. it seems to be shooting it well.

compressed loads are more efficient in that the column is correct when the round is chambered (horizontal). They also keep you from over charging a case when reloading due to any more powder will not fit.

The reason for this thread is that VV is my go to brand. They are the only manufacturer that has control over their ingredients. They manufacture everything in house. Most powder suppliers actually get ingredients from them

For some reason I can't access David's reloading information nor can I find it reproduced with a quick search, not in-depth.

However VihtaVuori has some data for N160:

Test barrel: 620 mm (24”), 1 in 8” twist
Primers: Large Rifle
Cases: Norma, trim-to length 48,20 mm (1.898”)

105 Scenar Lapua @ 2,717" C.O.L.

N160/ 31,6 grains (min)/ 2516 fps/ 37,5 grains (max)/ 2871fps

I eliminated the metric designation but all the information can be found here:

This is definitely not a compressed load by any means... but it's data and can be used as a starting point.

Good Luck with your project!

I've used N160 in my 6XC with 105-115gr bullets; 40.1grs seems pretty close to a max load with moly'd S107MKs. Velocity may not be what some get with H4350, but accuracy in a somewhat picky bbl was excellent with the N160 load. I've also used quite a bit of N160 in a couple of 6x47 Lapua rifles - both with 1-7.5tw 30" Palma bbls. The BAT 3L prone rifle shot very well for me in 1000yd matches with N160 & DTAC 115s.
