6x47 vs 6bR?

I am adding another barrel to my savage collection. The question is 6x47 or 6BR? Mostly going to be used for shots at or under 500yds. Mostly for my amusement (that means what ever the hell I feel like shooting at). I am not a match shooter, and I am a reloader. I will be trying a few whitetails with it and lots of dirt clods, crows, black walnuts when in season, and things like that.

Thanks

my thoughts are that I want an accurate round - that's both of them - brass has to be available (not like the on again off again of the 221 fireball brass) long brass life, not too hard on barrels (I don't shoot thousands of rounds - just came in from my backyard range and only fired about 20 hornets and 25 223's that's enough to make me smile) easy to load as I am not really into fire forming cases all that much and it has to have a way high cool factor

I don't know much about the 6x47, but from what you described sounds to me like you would like the 6br. It's accurate, good barrel life, and brass is readly available. If you are going to also hunt whitetails with it you may consider an 8 twist barrel and a 105 bullet. Good luck.

yep that's been told to me before and I agree. that 6br is at the top of the list, it's just that someone has a 6x47 barrel for a good price. however I have heard bad things about that round and forming brass and getting them to shoot.

The stubby 6BR is an inherently accurate, easy to load round that could take anything from a prairie dog to a deer with the right bullet. It can have feeding problems and has excellent barrel life. It is a great 600 yard cartridge with 105-108 bullets.

The 6X47 does everything the 6BR does a little bit better and might feed more reliably but have a little less barrel life. It is easily sized from Lapua 6.5X47 brass.

For hands down, ease of everything, it is tough to beat the 6BR. I have a Savage 12F with ~400 rounds through it in 6BR and a Stiller Viper SS 6BR in the works. It's one of my favorite cartridges. I do not have a 6X47. Between the 6BR and my 6mm Remingtons, my 6mm bases are covered.

dlebeck,

I know 5 guys that built a 6X47L for 600 yd benchrest and could not get them to shoot. Tey went back to the 6BR or IMP. If you want more speed look at the 6BR or 6 Dasher. The 6BR is the way to go.

I have had 3 6x47s and can say that forming brass is very easy it only takes 1 trip through a FL die and your done. 2 of the guns are bench guns the shoot well, last year i set a new record with it at south fork rifle range. The other is set up as a tactical gun and it has takin grounghogs at 750yds and deer at 310yds. As it was said before the 6x47 picks up where the 6br lets off.

Well if you only planing on shooting out to 500 yards, meaning you will shoot closer, I would pick the 6BR because the additional case capacity is not needed, with lighter bullets. Also the 6BR just has more loading information. 6br brass is cheaper.

Savage makes a special center feed magazine for the 6br. The 6BR doesn't feed well from the old stagged feed actions. The 6x47 lapua feeds well from a 22/250 magazine.

I have a 6x47 lapua I shoot long range IBS Match's with and would not trade it for the world. I feel the round flat out beats a BR and its variants in long range. I been told that Bat and some other actions have problems with hang fires, misfire, and inconsistent ignition with the 6x47L. My Savage shoots the 6x47 L lights out, and I have never had a single problem.

No question 6mmBr. I have both on Savage single shot actions and the 6mmBr is way easier to get to shoot and is just so easy to load for.

I say a BR/Dasher. I know a few high scoring shooters who have described the 6x47 as hot and cold. I have had the occaisional good range, the the next its a dog???
These are target only shooters who use them for F class and long range benchrest. Most say the same as I have found, yeah, my new 6x47 is great, followed by umm hang on, no its not. This is for target standards only, even the bad shots would have been great for hunting/playing.
If you will be doing a bit of plinking, you will get more rounds before you barrel over heats, fouls, erodes the throat or starts blowing bullets up.
If you just want to do long range hunting (Not machine gunning lots of shots), the the 6x47 would be great.
I have had all 3, now just the Dasher.

I would go with the 6 br thats what I'm building for my first bench type rifle . I like the fact of burning roughly 30 grains of powder to get out to a 1000 yards thats over 250 rounds per pound of powder thats a big plus ( lots of shooting) but i'll be doing more 600 yard bench rest.

Buy both!! They are both superb. and accurate rounds.

Only joking. I am really only repeating things that have been said. They both have their advantages.
Without doubt the 6BR is very easy to load and nearly every one I have seen shoots well. The 6*47 is indeed a better long range round but can be trickier to get to perform. I see no advantage 500yds down. Some have no problems but there has certainly been a few issues by others. It does feed superbly through a magazine though and with long vld bullets works in the short action .308 or 22 250 platform beautifully.
Both will definately do the job for you but it possibly could take a bit more effort to get the 6*47 working well (but with more grunt and better mag feeding! and if you persevere will be great).

6x47 Lapua all the way, specially since you are planning on shooting deer, the extra energy the 6x47 offers will be helpful.

The 6x47 Lapua is what the 6BR wants to be when it grows up!

I just also thought about this - You have posted this on the "other 6mm" group. No doubt biasing towards the 6x47. Best if you also post on the 6BR group too.
