6X47 Swiss Match

Santa Clause came by the house this morning. I spent the next few hours assembling the rifle back together. spun the barrel on, installed the action backinto the Tube gun stock & putting on the trigger. Then it was time to figure out the headspace and size some of the cases. Steve made me nice Headspace gage and Stoney point cartridge since there isnt anything on the market for the Swiss Match.

The hard part was researching what powders to use on this case. It looks like most folks are using H4350 with ther Lapua's and 6XC's. Un fortunatly I have just a tiny bit of that powder. I have others real close to that burn rate so In the morning Ill see it all come together. Wish I had a quickload.

There is snow on the ground now and Load development time is getting very short. I managed to get out and get some barrel break in and some diffrent powders tested. My last two tests where with N550 and Reloader 19. Both show some promise with Reloader 19 leading the way. Ill need some more time to tweek things such as Neck tension and seating depth but here are few pictures of the results so far.

RAUG brass, 210 match primers and 105Berger VLD.

Keep in mind I am Not a bench shooter and this was with a round tube gun forend.

Be safe and have fun.

Thought I would add a pic that compares the case to others. Wish I had a 6XC handy in the mix.

Enjoy

Great picture, Russ - thanks! The 6XC is so close to the 6x47 Lapua that we can see the relationship to the 6x47SM anyway. The 6x47SM has the neck length that I wish the 6XC had.

Getting the speed UP!!!!

I happend to stumble onto a can of Reloader 17 and a couple cans of Norma 204 powder. My thought was Hey I need to test these two powders in the 6X47. So with Credit card in hand I headed for the counter.

The groups where not as good with any of these two powders as it was with the N550 or Reloader 19 in the above pictures. I thought to myself... Self is it just me today? So pulled my lucky6.5X284 out of the case set it on the bench lined up and shot a .259 five shot group. Nope not me today.

The good Reloader 19 group is going 2970FPS with a full case.....

....
top N550 load that I tried was 37.5gr going 3104fps Avg

Norma 204
38gr = 2987fps
38.5 = 2999fps best group of day. (.403)
39gr = 3059fps
39.5 = 3116fps
40gr = 3155fps Just the slightests bit of stickey bolt

Reloader 17
38.5 = 3094fps
39gr = 3120fps
39.5 = 3169fps
40gr = 3217fps Again just getting stickey at the top. (Next best group @ .451)

At 42* both these top loads would very likley be too hot in the summer 80's with high humidity.

Im seeing a close resemblance to the 6XC and 6X47Lapua. Looks to be more of the same. If I had a 6XC I would consider Norma 204 or N550 for 600 yards plus. Or atleast give it a try.

I have a 6x47L barrel that loves RL19. Its an awesome powder. Easy to clean and burns cool promoting good barrel life. Its nearly perfect burn rate for these cartridges.

If you happen to find some let me know.... they dont import them. I made a few out of 6.5X47Lapua with one stroke of the loading press. Very very nice to do and easy. I have also made some from Winshester 22-250 brass and 70gr SMK's to fire form.

Hi Rtheurer.

How did the ones you made work out for you?

I'm working on trying to get some but it doesn't look good to be truthful. However if it works out I'll let you know.

Rtheurer I think if you try RL17 to get it to shoot well and low ES you have to go to heavy neck tension,like .004 under a loaded round or .003. it really was not my finding I saw a two guys at the range shooting heavy bullets in .308's and they said they were shooting RL17 and it seemed to shoot better if they crimed their bullets in. so I went right home pulled out the 6.5 creedmoore put on .004 neck tension filled it with RL17 and it was shooting low .300's and ES's were 15 to 20 FPS for 20 shot strings with a 5-6 fps SD. that has been the only way I have been able to get RL17 to shoot well for me.

Just thought I throw that out there.

Changeling
Fire formed over 200 pieces of 22-250 brass into Swiss Match with no problem. I found a good way to make it work off the net and I can share with you once Iget home From the Canadian Nationals. Since the neck is really really really long there is tendency to crush the shoulder into an accordian shape if you dont squeeze the sholder area first.
Using 6.5X47 Lapua Brass is however.... stupid simple. Insert case into press and run the ram and brass up into your Swiss Match Die and bingo your done. You now have small primer pocket Swiss Match Lapua Brass. Violla.
I have mine set up to shoot NRA XTC shooting wich includes Rapid fire at 200 and 300. Ill use the Winchester brass for those phases and Lapua/RAUG for the 600 yard phases. Brass can become lost or damaged a little in the rapids so best to loose the Winchester and not my RAUG brass. That was my thought anyway.
FJIM:
That would be like jambing bullets to build pressure in the case. I can understand that and it makes sense in my head anyway. Still not a big fan of the R17 in anything I have tried it in. Just never seems to work in the long run.

XTR: Is it OK to go back and ask a question from 5 years ago? I did not read that in the bylaws....

XTR has it nailed on the head to what all of us have suspected for years. "Ammo has a "shelf life" and it must by used quickly upon completion of the re-loading process or it goes bad. My dad told me about 50 years ago that the ammo may go bad, therefore we must shoot it. This was back in the late 50's and that theory apparently holds water today!
Get to shooting fellas! ;D

Ha! Yep I agree.... Sorry we didnt get to chat Loyd while at Perry this year.... The whole thing seemed off with the late days and delays going on.

Ha! If I actually sold anything instead of buy buy buy that may be the right way to go. Your correct that this is not Mainstream by any stretch of the imagination, or at least in the USA anyway as its used over sea's.
It was a little diffrent so I had to try it. All in all its pretty much the same thing as the 6XC, 6X47 Lapua or the 240NMC. Just a little diffrent and that is why I chose it as it was not a 6XC.

Resale?!... Silly goose.

Got to love thses obscure cartridges.
