6x47 Shehane

In ignored 5-10MPH winds and 34 degree temps I got the following 6x47L, 5 shot, 105VLD, average velocities, 15 feet down range:
38.5g H4350 = 3125fps
39g “ = 3139
39.5g “ = 3170
40g “ = 3208
40.5g “ = 3236
SDs were single digit in all.

Previous 3 shot 105VLD groups with IMR4350 ran from 38.5g = 3031fps to 40g = 3152fps. All with single digit SDs

Best groups @ 100 yards so far are from the 2-5 shot groups using 108BTs & 40g N160 doing 3051fps. SDs for both groups was 8 with an ES of 18fps. Haven’t tried different powder charges with N160 yet. All with CCI SR Mag primers. Waiting on Reloader 17 and better weather to try longer distances.

What size groups are you getting man? Thanks, Bill

jb, it’s a 6x47L chambered Brux barrel I picked up here used about 6 months ago. If I remember right it was threaded for a Panda and I just had it headspaced for my Kelbly Griz2. Not sure if it is an 8 or 9 twist anymore. It is a slight turn neck. Remember that it had less than 100 rounds on it and it was a good buy. Those readings are all off of a cheap Crony. So they could be off some. The 40.5g H4350 load was expanding the base of the case around .0004”. So that is what I’d consider near a max load. The 40g H4350 load was expanding the case around .0001”. I couldn’t see any expansion on the 39.5g load cases. Yes agreed, 3 & 5 shot groups give only a vague idea of what the real SD is.

Bill, since I forgot the flags both times I went out to test this barrel I was pretty much ignoring the wind. The 2-5 shot 40g N160 loads were in the 3s. The 5 shot 38.5g H4350 load was .26”. The 38.5g IMR4350 load was ½” at 205 yards and had an ES of just 3 for the 3 shots. Everything else was in the 4s” & 5s” except a flyer with 39.5g H4350 that opened that to .91”. This is working with fowler cases and bullets. .001” tension pushed well into the lands.

I’m thinking that the gents that have been saying they’re getting their best accuracy well under max with the 6x47 may be on to something. And I have 4-9 shot loads that I want to run through the crony and onto the paper as soon as there’s even a slight break in this 10-20 MPH freezing weather. Powder Valley told me they don’t expect R17 till the middle of March. Anybody give R19 a try?

tripcrow, I don't believe that my load of 41.0 gr. of VV-N560 is even close to being hot. I have never seen any pressure signs at all and my P-35 said 3060 fps at 85 degrees so I agree with you about the accuracy being better down below max loads. I have not tried any RL-19 at all in my rifle. I am going to try the new IMR-4007ssc real soon since I picked up that info on the blog page saying that 39.0 was working with the 108 gr. bullets. I will let you know how that works out. Bill

...Yep...actually my main 1000yd gun is a 6mmBR pushing the same 105 Berger at 2915fps...and many people can attest to how it does at 1000yds,Check out Gun of the Week 70)...so with an additional 200+fps it has no problem at all with 1000yds. only 21MOA to 1000 I haven't had enough time to really play with the 6x47 as much as I wanted to in the past year...

I have the luxury of a mile-long range between mine and my neighbor's property. Needless to say I have played extensively and I have been using a good ol' 6BR and 105 Bergers.

With a no-turn neck and doing 2900 fps, I am able to get 10 out of ten shots on an 18" steel saw blade gong. I admit I won't win anything with a group like that,Pilot error!), but it shows that these bullets are amazingly stable through transonic speeds. I think the 6BR in its unfettered form has more potential than most people give it credit for at longer distances.
