6x47 Shehane

Anyone shooting Bills 6x47Shehane with the 40degree shoulder?
What type of velocity and accuracy are you getting. Looking for anothe top notch 600 yard cartridge.

Bob

Bob, I'm no BR shooter but I do have one of Bill's 6 X 47 Shehane. I have been shooting the 6.5 Lapua necked down and turned brass - 105 gr. Berger VLD,no moly) with 41.0 gr. of VV-N560 - 450 CCI mag. SRP. I am seating .010 jam to lands - 28" Krieger 1 - 8 twist barrel with .270 neck dia. In 85 degree temps my P-35 says 3060 fps. 05, 06, 07, SD. My best group at 500 yds. so far is .991 and bug holes at 100 yds. That NF NXS 12 - 42 sure don't hurt anything. As you can tell I am happy with it's performance. Bill

Bill,

I'm really impressed about the cartridge and I believe Bill Shehane when he sez it will shoot and is a perfect 600 yard competition cartridge. I'd take your 500 group anyday. Just wanted to hear from shooters that are actually shooting it to reaffirm my liking of it.

Bob

Another valid reason to like the Dasher case instead, though.
I run 33.6 gr. of Varget with the 105's at 2975 fps. in my Dasher.
Is 7.4 grains more powder worth it, for less than 100 fps?

Al.

OK, I have to ask the question. How is the 6x47 Shehane any different than any of the 46, 47, and 48mm wildcats that have been used in both 600 and 1000 Benchrest over the past 10 to 15 years????:confused:

Ray

Ray, The shoulder has been moved forward and the angle is changed. I believe that is the only difference. Bill

Bill

There are several of the wildcats that have the same, if not identical, configuration. Every shoulder angle from 20 to 40 degrees and probably others that I've not seen.

I'm not questioning the accuracy of the 6x47 Shehane. But the others were accurate too.

Years ago, when rumors started leaking out about the 6x47 SM and the 6.5x47 LAPUA, shooters were interested because we finally could get rid of all the case-forming chores. And what was the first thing that happened? We started changing the case.:cool::rolleyes:

Ray

Yea, Ray. But that is what makes this game more fun. It never stops changing. But if you think about it, a lot of good stuff has come to be chambered by factory guys because of BR. This group is really good about beating down the path for others. Bill

Bill

I agree with everything you said. I've thought about getting some of that 6.5x47 brass and changing it myself. :)

Ray

The 6x47 Shehane is simply one that has a 40 degree shoulder and is blown out a little. Bill Shehane did it to prevent as much trimming the case as with the regular cartridge after numerous firings and give you a little more capacity if you want it. I've always liked the 40 degree shoulder.

I guess anyone that has a reamer made to his spec's can call it anything they want so if anyone else wants to order it has a name to reqest it from Pacific. I'm thinking of a 6br with a 375 neck and call it 6br375BigBob. Should be a great cartrige for 50yard match for score competiton. Seriously, I think the 6x47Shehane is a great 600 yard cartridge. I hear some are shooting it at 1000 and doing quite well.

Bob

Me too Bob on the 40 degree shoulder. It kind of looks like a Weatherby style case to me.

Ray, If you don't mind me asking, what caliber do you shoot now? Thanks, Bill

Bill

For 600 yards I still shoot 6mm. A 6PPC for those good conditions, and either 244 Ackley or my 240 Orphan,.300 short 244 with 40 degree shoulder) for when things aren't so good. When I am ready to make a new barrel it will probably be either a 6x47 LAPUA or a 6BR, no-turn on either one.

Ray

Thanks Ray. Yea, I want a 6BR next. I think I am going to wait on the Savage and see what the twist is going to be. If it don't perform I can always have a barrel put on it but the 6.5 X 284 F/class and the 22-250 LRPV has done well for me. Do you do your own work only or do you "smith" for hire? Bill

I am doing 3150 easy with my unaltered 6x47 Lapua with a 30" Rock Barrel...

I would hope to get at least an honest 3200 to make it worth the brass forming...

Then again, maybe I am biased...I HATE forming brass :)

YMMV,
JB

JB,

Are you shooting it at 1000 yards? I know it's a great 600 yard cartridge, just wondering how accurate it is at 1000.

Also, with the regular 6x47 are you getting much case stretching?

Bob

Yep...actually my main 1000yd gun is a 6mmBR pushing the same 105 Berger at 2915fps...and many people can attest to how it does at 1000yds,Check out Gun of the Week 70)...so with an additional 200+fps it has no problem at all with 1000yds. only 21MOA to 1000 ;) I haven't had enough time to really play with the 6x47 as much as I wanted to in the past year...

Will have to get back to you on the case growth...

JB

Jason:

Good to see you back! I always look forward to your posts, articles and projects. Say Hello to that beautiful new bride, and good luck at the new job.

In ignored 5-10MPH winds and 34 degree temps I got the following 6x47L, 5 shot, 105VLD, average velocities, 15 feet down range:
38.5g H4350 = 3125fps
39g “ = 3139
39.5g “ = 3170
40g “ = 3208
40.5g “ = 3236
SDs were single digit in all.

Previous 3 shot 105VLD groups with IMR4350 ran from 38.5g = 3031fps to 40g = 3152fps. All with single digit SDs

Best groups @ 100 yards so far are from the 2-5 shot groups using 108BTs & 40g N160 doing 3051fps. SDs for both groups was 8 with an ES of 18fps. Haven’t tried different powder charges with N160 yet. All with CCI SR Mag primers. Waiting on Reloader 17 and better weather to try longer distances.

This a straight 6x47 Lapua? That is a FAST barrel!

40.4 gets me 3150...with your same bullet/primer.

SD on a 5-shot group doesn't mean much...ES would give you a better view IMO...
